Less than two days to the New Year, so I might as well get started on the "year in review" memes. Seeing as Snowflake Challenge also starts on the first, and as I put together a list of goals as part of this year's challenge, let's see how I did. Spoiler alert: it's a mixed bag. )

Challenge #13

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Years ago, I sent ma soeur the first season of Adventure Time on DVD. ) She is definitely a fanwork that touched my heart 💖 and one that brought our fandom interaction over Adventure Time full circle.

...but am I going to post that today? I am not. Instead, I offer this meme from [personal profile] luthien in which I still manage to talk a lot about books. I may or may not post the actual reading meme tomorrow.

1. Your main fandom of the year?
I consumed a lot of stuff, but this was a bad year for me as far as producing anything went. Aside from my Yuletide fic, I think I only wrote one drabble.

2. Your favourite film you watched this year?
Black Widow was a lot of fun. (That said, I watched a total of four films this year, so it’s not a populous field.)

3. Your favourite book read this year?
The House on Vesper Sands by Paraic O’Donnell, which narrowly edged out Eve Laure’s The Curses.

4. Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Kyla LaGrange’s Cut Your Teeth, with my favorite song being “I’ll Call For You” off of the same. That entire album is sonic perfection.

5. Your favourite TV show of the year?
WandaVision, which I didn’t even think I was going to like. But holy crap, I loved it. Pastiche, humor, social commentary—it had it all, even before it delivered the searing character studies.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Although it’s currently a fandom of one (i.e., me), The House on Vesper Sands. That book was written for me.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
That I’m still waiting for the next seasons of The Dragon Prince.

8. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
The House on Vesper Sands’ Inspector Cutter, by a healthy margin.

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Summer Grace from Laure Eve’s The Curses, also by a healthy margin.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Finally, finally, finally obtaining Minsc, Beloved Ranger as literally the final card in the final MtG booster pack I purchased this year, after I’d all but given up hope of ever doing so.

Runners up: CM Punk and Bryan Danielson debuting on AEW.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Not a fandom per se, but I’m still hearbroken that Sugiura Shiho retired as a mangaka. I need another of her immersive, brilliantly populated fantasy worlds in my life.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
So I did in fact get the MXTX novels for Giftmas. I am ambivalent about reading any of these in (English) translation, but you’re far more likely to snare me with a book than with a television series, so here I find myself.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
At the moment, I can’t think of fan anticipations that aren’t books, so here we are:

Katherine Addison’s The Grief of Stones (sequel to The Witness for the Dead in the Goblin Emperor universe) is set to publish in June. It’s going to be too expensive and too short and I will still buy it the day it comes out.

Naomi Novik’s The Golden Enclaves will publish in September, and I am on tenterhooks waiting to see if my theories on malia and what it is that actually powers all of the institutions in El’s world is borne out.

Melissa Albert’s fourth book is set to publish as well, and I’m very excited about that.

Microsoft is in talks to purchase Discord. Ars has them in the "late stages" while according to the NYT they're "preliminary," but either way, this news does not delight. Microsoft fucks up everything it touches.

...but instead I give you SurveyFAIL '09. Hours and hours of WTFun!?!? for all!

Seriously, it's stuff like this that makes me regret not getting my Masters in gender studies after all.

Three friends dragged me to Universal Studios Japan earlier this week. I am a huge fan of roller coasters and not much of a fan of Hollywood, so there was not much there to amuse me.

However, I have been a huge, huge fan of Terminator 2 since it came out.Read more... )

In which, directed by [livejournal.com profile] bloody_american, I enter the fray created by another pseudo-academic essay outlining why fanfiction and slash are OMG, leik so retrogressive! Thanks for playing, though. )

For a good laugh, I also recommend the section on "radical feminist rewriting" where fanfiction/slash=bad, m'kay? and feminist rewriting=any story of which I approve, as well as her admission that she's deleted everything save the only two postive comments she's received. I mean, isn't silencing dissenting voices exactly what radical feminists are supposed to stand against?

Surely teh gei man is a sexual predator!), or starting that bit of wank myself.

So it looks like fandom is not getting off easy this time, and that LJ Abuse is being as underhanded as they can about it.

I haven't been able to do much with fandom this past year (I no longer have a private Internet connection), which means I now live in fear of a mass fandom exodus taking place without me.

So. Where are you guys headed, for backup purposes or otherwise? I've had my lj for going on four years now, and I'll be sad to abandon it, but I'm sticking with my fic fix.

Now, I've come into this controversy fairly late, and most of the potential problems with FanLib/CW have already been handily dealt with by other fen here on Henry Jenkin's blog.

I agree that Chris Williams is coming at this from a distinctly non-fennish profit-to-be-made MBA standpoint, that his site has the potential to create ten times as many problems legally as it "solves" user-wise, that he doesn't know the first thing about his target demographic, that online fandom already has at its disposal elsewhere all of the "features" his archive offers, etc, etc.

This leaves Williams with only one novel thing to potentially provide to me, the fanficcer: the opportunity to "get closer to the talent behind [my] favorite fandoms and participate in fun events" and "to be recognized and discovered by a wider audience and by our media partners."

And therein lies the problem. )

So, nope. Count me out on this one.
