Challenge #15

In your own space, opine on the future of fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So if you think about it, fandom has exited online for about only two decades. That's not actually much time at all in the grand scheme of things. So I hope the future of fandom will involve participants figuring out how to combine the best elements of the various permutations of fandom in that time: the close knit community vibe of the early online years, the increasing variety of fandoms, platforms, and engagement styles of the early aughts; the ease of locating communities, participants, and content of the late aughts, and the consideration for others' experiences of recent years...while jettisoning the negative aspects of those periods (e.g. clannishness, trolling, conflating "not my thing" with actively harmful content, and so on).

Challenge #12

In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Reading goals:
  • As always, read at least 100 books cover-to-cover.
  • End the year with fewer than 180 unread books in my place. Right now I have 201.
  • Read three books for every new book I acquire.
  • Index all my book reviews so that they’re discoverable. I meant to do this last year and did not. So. This year it is.
  • Since 2021 I've put together a I need to read, am currently reading, or want to reread, to see how many of them I actually do finish reading by December 31st. Here's this year's list.

Activity goals:
  • Do yoga more regularly.
  • Sit zazen daily.
  • Strength train at least once a week.
  • Drink down my Strategic Tea Reserve. (I'm counting this as an activity because hydration is important, ya'll.)
  • Take a 3 to 5 mile walk most days of the week.

Creativity goals:
  • Fill one lined journal.
  • Work on some kind of visual art at least once a week.
  • Play through three unfinished games in my backlog.
  • Learn at least ten new Irish flute tunes, solidly.
  • Play Jaws of the Lion, Dragonfire, and Gloomhaven.

Language goals
  • Finish DuoLingo Latin.
  • Work through one Teach Yourself book from beginning to end.
  • Finish my second go-through of the Learning Manx podcast.
  • Finish the FSI Indonesian Basic Course.
  • Work through one resource in another language from beginning to end.

Writing goals:
  • Complete [community profile] getyourwordsout. This year I have a word count goal, which I will count as completed if I meet it through a combination of Wednesday book reviews and fic in draft format. Bonus points if I hit it solely with fic in draft format. Hitting it entirely with finished fic unlocks legendary mode
  • Complete [community profile] inkingitout + participate more actively in comments.
  • Archive old fics on AO3.
  • Post at least one piece of fiction to AO3 a month (even if it is only a drabble).
  • Finish at least one languishing WIP.

Challenge #11

In your own space, Talk about your favorite trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have so many! But a perennial favorite--and one I've been grooving on recently--is the steady-to-buttoned-up character absolutely losing their shit to protect someone they care about. Bonus points if that person is a potential or current love interest. Double bonus points if the character's self-image is predicated on the idea that they are a nice, steady person who never loses their cool. Triple bonus points if they snap into a state of embarrassed docility once the the threat is lifted (Oh god, I can't believe I did that. Who am I?). Think:
  • Sam going Extreme Badass in Cirith Ungol.

  • Hakkai pulling off his limiters to save Gojou and the rest of the Sanzo-ikko.

  • Chigusa flipping out to protect Rakan (and Rakan flipping out to protect Chigusa, omg).

  • Rasaad flipping a shit over those pesky feelings in the caves under Dragonspear Castle.

  • Stephen going berserk at a certain development during Grace's trial.
and so on.

The other great thing about this trope/cliché is its wide applicability to characters in source material that hints at it, but either doesn't include it canonically or does but in a way that fanfic can further amplify: BBC Sherlock, Fullmetal Alchemist, Dredd, The Goblin Emperor, The Graces, Kushiel's Dart, the Queen's Thief...the list goes on.

Just give me anything that takes--or has the potential to take--a character who prides themself on being the calm, rational one who never flies off the handle and then makes them do precisely that, and I will be there for it.

Challenge #9

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have been alone, indoors, for a grand total of just under three hours over the last 1,041 days due to the fact that the GC has a job where they can telework and I have a job where I cannot. I am an introvert and this has, to put it lightly, not been ideal. But: three hours of alone time, total, in 1,041 days and I have survived. That is a huge win.

So I waffled a lot on how to answer this prompt, because there are so many things I'd like to promo, primer, or manifesto. Then I realized I could do that for a favorite fandom, character, and ship all in one fell swoop. Allow me to introduce Rasaad )

Just, gah. Play these games. Play them at least once with Rasaad in your party. Romance him too, if you’re inclined. It’s worth it.

Challenge #5

In your own space, tell us about 3 creative/fannish resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. I'm not a paid user and I try to avoid third party websites with a gazillion tracking scripts and cookies, so we'll do this old school. English-language fantasy? Yes! But which one?:
  • The Dark is Rising Sequence
  • Discworld
  • Harry Potter
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • The Mists of Avalon
  • The Prydain Chronicles
  • The Queen's Thief
  • The Sandman
  • Temeraire
  • Other

One of my main motivations for writing fanfic is to try to explain contradictions or discrepancies, or expand on lacunae in canon, so I've done this a bunch. )

As it turns out, I very recently worked through a "get it all out" elsewhere, so as it was already largely written, I've gone and fleshed it out a bit here. And as an added benefit, because I've done that I now get to go back and do the squeeing over a favorite thing for Challenge #2 afterwards.

But ahead of that, my scream into the void:

Let's agree that all an exchange participant needs to do is the actual exchange. )
