Continuing to work through this year's remaining challenges, we have:

Challenge #9

In your own space, create a fanwork.

Fandom: Baldur's Gate 3
Relationships Astarion/Tav
Summary: Standing in the sun, wading through a river, wandering into homes without an invitation... The world abounds with novelty for Astarion after his infection with a mind flayer tadpole, but this? This he could do in his sleep.
Notes: Takes place early-ish in Chapter 2, with spoilers for a specific scene. Assumes a female tiefling Tav urchin from Baldur's Gate.

Challenge #4

In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my main motivations for writing fanfic is to try to explain contradictions or discrepancies, or expand on lacunae in canon, so I've done this a bunch. )

Unsurprisingly, 2022 was not a terribly prolific year for me in terms of published fic. But when I went back to review my finished output, I was pleased to find that I'd posted far more works than I remembered having done. All of them are for pretty small fandoms (or in one case, a niche corner of a pretty large fandom), and it's gratifying so many of them received as much attention as they did.

All but one of them were written for exchanges or prompt communities, which is a break from my usual pattern. A third of those were treats, which is also novel for me because my typical SOP is to endlessly rework my assigned gift until the collection opens.

July was my most prolific month.

Baldur's Gate was my most-written fandom by number of works.

Blake & Avery was my most-written fandom by wordcount.

MCU: Thor was my most popular fic in terms of kudos and comments.

And here are the fics themselves. )

Hey, I've never posted a Six Sentence Sunday before, so why not start now?

[Untitled]
(The Goblin Emperor series)

Azhanharad had only just returned from overseeing the execution of one of Amalo's more vicious footpads when the courier brought word that his mother had died. He saw to the remainder of his duties at the Chapterhouse and then fled to the Vedriveise Gambit where he sat for the better part of the night, the letter crumpled in one hand as his tea cooled on the table before him, untouched.

The news was not, strictly speaking, unexpected, nor was it an unalloyed grief. His mother had been failing for years; had not even known who he was the last three seasons he had visited. But his duties in Amalo--to the city and to the Brotherhood--were many, and his visits were thus far less frequent than he would have wished.

Still, he had not been with her in the end and for that he could not forgive himself, no matter how hard he tried to pretend otherwise.

And my fic, also for Watchmaker. I'm so pleased to have matched in this fandom in both directions this year. I wrote the whole thing on a Nexus, which in addition to having size 2 font, features a text input/autocorrect system that was clearly developed by a sadist. There were long stretches when I would have given up in despair except I love this novel so much, to the extent that half a year ago I swore I would write the first fic in the fandom. And I did, and this is it:

...but I've been attempting to write again for the first time in ages, and, to a surprising degree, it's worked out. I don't get much written in each go, but what I do write takes the story an inch or two further beyond the-parts-of-the-plot-I-already-know-about, which is unusual for me, to say the least.

I think it's due in large part to Bookstore Tension. (And also the fact that I've busted Sempai out of three years' retirement and restored her to her original American English settings.) As in, I've just found myself supremely and constently irked these past few weeks every time I've gone into a bookstore or timesinked on LT. All these other people have written books. Why the hell haven't you?

The writing I have been doing is also probably facilitated by the fact that it's a way to studiously avoid writing the crack King's Man AU(?) that's been floating around in my head for the past three years, in which Changsaeng and Konggil are still alive and scrabbling about in exile in the mountains of northern Korea somewhere alongside Changgeum and Min Jeongho. Crack.

And since I'm already going this nutty with it, why not pull out all the stops and have Hwang Jin-i decide it was pretty fucking stupid to give up the Love of Her Life because staying with him would damn her to a life-of-poverty-and-not-art, and him to a life-of-poverty-and-not-service, but then that's exactly what they opted for at the end of the series, only without one another... and they go and join Changsaeng and Konggil and Changgeum and Cheongho and hopefully we can all see how this is spiralling out of control into one big AU-crossover-Kdrama clusterfuck. (And if I can find a way to incorporate Chumong into all of this, I WILL DO IT.) Crack.

So, yeah. Compared to all that, two sentences at a time doesn't seem like such a bad deal.
