Unsurprisingly, 2022 was not a terribly prolific year for me in terms of published fic. But when I went back to review my finished output, I was pleased to find that I'd posted far more works than I remembered having done. All of them are for pretty small fandoms (or in one case, a niche corner of a pretty large fandom), and it's gratifying so many of them received as much attention as they did.
All but one of them were written for exchanges or prompt communities, which is a break from my usual pattern. A third of those were treats, which is also novel for me because my typical SOP is to endlessly rework my assigned gift until the collection opens.
July was my most prolific month.
Baldur's Gate was my most-written fandom by number of works.
Blake & Avery was my most-written fandom by wordcount.
MCU: Thor was my most popular fic in terms of kudos and comments.
And here are the fics themselves:
Baldur's Gate
Big Enough For The Both Of Them
A triple drabble gift featuring two of my favorite characters from BGII. This was one of those times where everything just clicked and I said, Oh yes, this is how it would have gone down. I liked working Nalia's in-game dialogue into the fic, I liked taking two female characters a typical narrative arc would have set at one another's throats and not doing that, and I liked making Charname a critical presence even in her absence.
The Clarity of Purpose He Once Enjoyed
A drabble distillation of a scene from a longfic I've been endlessly writing, rewriting, and riffing on since 2020. I liked the challenge of working the dual structure into the 100-word limit, and playing with a rare moment of self-deception in an otherwise very self-aware character. I posted this one in response to a
100words prompt.
A Dish Fate Serves Cold
This exchange gift gave me the chance to write a fix-it fic for one of the most perplexing oversights in BGI, as well as the chance to write my favorite (and oft-overlooked) character from that game. I like that it takes place before said perplexing scene, meaning the audience knows Kivan won't find the closure he seeks, even though he doesn't yet.
Introductions
This was a treat for the same recipient in the same exchange, and it was really pleasing that they had no idea the same author had produced both until reveals! I liked writing a much more lighthearted take on Kivan and his interactions with the party. I liked tying the main interaction into both a major piece of in-game lore and a minor in-game side quest. I liked bouncing these two fundamentally different personalities off of one another, and I liked fitting it all into 300 words.
The Magic of Childhood
The last of my Baldur's Gate fics, also written as an exchange treat. I enjoyed imagining these two characters pre-canon, and how and why one of them might have set the other on her initial course, given the talents we learn she has in BGII.
Blake and Avery
Curious Alchemies
An exchange fic, and the longest thing I wrote all year. It features literal sex pollen(!) and as such is a bit of fun departure from my typically more canon-compliant fics in this fandom. Fun fact: its original title was a line from Rumi: Flowers open every night. I changed that at the 11th hour to the current title, still wasn't quite happy with that, but found I was stuck with it because the collection had been locked down before fic reveals. I can't say whether this is good or bad, but as the other two exchange fics for the fandom also had the word "flower" in their titles, at least it might have kept all the gifts from looking creepily sympatico...
Transportations
My other major exchange fic for the year, for which I basically took the climactic scene from a much longer plot bunny I'd been toying with for several years and cut directly to the chase. This one is almost all pure raunch, and oh my lord I had so much fun writing it.
The Goblin Emperor series
Fool's Errand
It was great fun to write this depiction of my favorite character from Katherine Addison's follow-on novel series to The Goblin Emperor trying to worm out of the awkward contradiction between his emotions and broader cultural taboos, and only digging himself a bigger hole. Judging by some of the comments I received I had a far more sympathetic view of said character than much of the larger fandom at the time, and I was tickled to find that my take wasn't far off the mark when the second novel came out several months after I'd posted the fic.
Star Struck
An exchange fic, for which, among my many offers, I chose one character (one character) of whom I had no memory in canon in order to meet my sign-up requirements. Of course, that was the character I matched on. I allowed myself a moment of panic, then sat down to do a canon review, and ended up writing a looong piece for said character, which I ultimately cut down to this double double-drabble. (See above in re: endlessly reworking my gift until the collection finally opens.) I really enjoyed fleshing out a backstory for her and taking a look at what familial, cultural, and interpersonal dynamics might have led her to the position she occupies when we first meet her in the book.
MCU: Thor
One Divine Hammer
The last of my fics, my exchange fics, and my treats for the year. This one was so much fun to write, and judging by the kudos and comments, a lot of readers are having fun with it too.
Our Flag Means Death
Release
Written for a
100words prompt, I enjoyed the challenge of working the descriptive language and the depiction of Izzy's emotions and psychological state into just 100 words, even if the canonical scene it retells is grim.
