Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. I am not afraid to be a geek.

2. You know how when little kids get excited about music or a book and run around the room in circles? I never grew out of that.

3. I'm an introvert.

4. I have a green thumb.

5. I get really enthusiastic about the stuff I like.

Day 10
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is a little tricky as I've not been actively participating in fandom for the past several years. So let's see where I can take this.

In terms of general hanging out and squeeing, nothing beats LibraryThing for finding new reading material. I spend hours stalking people's libraries, tag surfing, reading reviews, writing reviews...

The only thing I've written in, erm, a year, was a Watchmaker of Filigree Street Yuletide fic, but here's what I'd recommend for digging up canon facts. )

In terms of general squeeing, I've been following this blog for the better part of eight years: ボーイズラブを読む.

Day 09

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My goals for the year (public, to help me hold myself to them):

1. Write and post one standalone fic or chapter of a fic each month.

2. Post more.

3. Rec online, and not just in person.

4. Review the canon stuff I am reading and watching.

Day 08

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Done! And I am going to try to continue doing this throughout the year, and not just on special challenge days.

Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Start a fandom! I personally have spent a goodly amount of time going, Where are the Ouchou Romanse Moroe/Narushige/Senju threesome fics? and, If only someone would write fanfic from Naono Bohra djs about Karaku and Kichiza and the gang.

Maybe the trick is that if one person starts the ball rolling, other people who've been thinking the same thing will come out of the woodwork. They'll probably never be large fandoms, or even particularly active (especially if the source material is older), but they'll be bigger than they were before. And sharing the love is good!

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

This book is wonderful in about all the ways a book can be. First, let's talk about the beauty of Pulley's writing. It's spare, without a word out of place, but so, so richly descriptive. Here's our main character, Thaniel, on page 15 discussing filing mandatory wills with a coworker while they wait to see if Irish separatists make good on a bomb threat against their employer:

Just, guh.

Not since Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief have I read a book that gets so much better with each read. I'll never be able to re-experience the initial discovery of reading Watchmaker for the first time but having read it three times now, I realise how ridiculously tightly plotted it is with each new read. I never skim; if I'm reading something I'm reading it damn closely, and it's a rare book where I miss things on the second read, to say nothing of the first.

And Pulley is a joy; she never tells you anything. She just quietly shows (and boy does she know how to show) and trusts her readers are smart enough and careful enough to catch it. Here are some of my favorite examples of this with bonus gushing. If you haven't already, READ THE BOOK FIRST. You won't regret it. Now having properly caveated, Bonus gushing. )

TL;DR: Pulley is talented. Watchmaker is damn good. Read it.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The prompt has three categories of fanworks, so I'll do one from each.

Favorite Fanwork: 年末怪奇事記 (A Record of Unusual Occurrences in the Eleventh and Twelfth Months) - Onmyouji/陰陽師
This was so much fun to write. I had a clear understanding of how the plot would develop early during the writing (a rarity for me), an uninterrupted week to devote to getting it down, and a blast incorporating all the litte references and in-jokes. And I just love this fandom and these characters, and they were so cooperative while I was writing! At the time, it was the longest fic I'd written in the least amount of time, and the process just flowed.

Fanwork No One Ever Saw: Memory Remains - Gensou Suikoden/幻想水滸伝
There aren't very many people in this fandom, and probably far fewer into this pairing, but the interactions between McDohl and Gremio were my favorite thing about the game. Plus, I'm a sucker both for hurt/comfort and younger servant/devoted master pairings, and boy does this pair bring both in spades. Some day I'll get around to writing about what they get up to after the game's conclusion.

Defining Fanwork: King - MCU: Thor, Avengers
By far the longest and most ambitious thing I've written, or rather, am writing, because it's still a work in progress. This fic is unusual for me in that I had pretty much the whole story arc plotted out before starting to write (and if I hadn't I doubt I would have even begun), and because it has a large cast of characters (including multiple OCs) when I'm most comfortable working with four characters, max. This fic is teaching me a lot about continuing to write even when I can't get the ideas down the way I want them, and knowing when to jump ahead in the story to write the parts that are clearest right now, even if it will be months before I can post them.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

So I thought about this for a little bit and said, Hey! There was a ridiculous amount of excellent Yuletide fic this year, and since today is Twelfth Night, why not pick a fic for each of the Twelve Days of Yuletide for Day 5 of this challenge? So I did.

The fics come from the following fandoms: Baldur's Gate, Fake, The Graveyard Book, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Mabinogion, The Queen's Thief, Samurai Flamenco, Song of Achilles, The Squire's Tales, Uprooted, and The Watchmaker of Filigree Street.Read more... )

Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It has been a looong time since I've done any fandom things. And that is why I am doing the challenge. I've been participating in fandom in one way or another for as long as the Internet has existed, but the past eight years repeatedly bludgeoned over the head with real life and I either lacked either the time or the energy to really follow fannish things closely.

Now things have calmed down, I am getting back in. And the Snowflake Challenge? Community! Goals! A way to kick off fandom 2016! What's not to like? So, here I am.

(Eventually, I will get around to crossposting these entries at my LiveJournal. Baby steps, baby steps...)
