My goals for the year (public, to help me hold myself to them):

1. Write and post one standalone fic or chapter of a fic each month.

2. Post more.

3. Rec online, and not just in person.

4. Review the canon stuff I am reading and watching.

Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Start a fandom! I personally have spent a goodly amount of time going, Where are the Ouchou Romanse Moroe/Narushige/Senju threesome fics? and, If only someone would write fanfic from Naono Bohra djs about Karaku and Kichiza and the gang.

Maybe the trick is that if one person starts the ball rolling, other people who've been thinking the same thing will come out of the woodwork. They'll probably never be large fandoms, or even particularly active (especially if the source material is older), but they'll be bigger than they were before. And sharing the love is good!

The prompt has three categories of fanworks, so I'll do one from each.

Favorite Fanwork: 年末怪奇事記 (A Record of Unusual Occurrences in the Eleventh and Twelfth Months) - Onmyouji/陰陽師
This was so much fun to write. I had a clear understanding of how the plot would develop early during the writing (a rarity for me), an uninterrupted week to devote to getting it down, and a blast incorporating all the litte references and in-jokes. And I just love this fandom and these characters, and they were so cooperative while I was writing! At the time, it was the longest fic I'd written in the least amount of time, and the process just flowed.

Fanwork No One Ever Saw: Memory Remains - Gensou Suikoden/幻想水滸伝
There aren't very many people in this fandom, and probably far fewer into this pairing, but the interactions between McDohl and Gremio were my favorite thing about the game. Plus, I'm a sucker both for hurt/comfort and younger servant/devoted master pairings, and boy does this pair bring both in spades. Some day I'll get around to writing about what they get up to after the game's conclusion.

Defining Fanwork: King - MCU: Thor, Avengers
By far the longest and most ambitious thing I've written, or rather, am writing, because it's still a work in progress. This fic is unusual for me in that I had pretty much the whole story arc plotted out before starting to write (and if I hadn't I doubt I would have even begun), and because it has a large cast of characters (including multiple OCs) when I'm most comfortable working with four characters, max. This fic is teaching me a lot about continuing to write even when I can't get the ideas down the way I want them, and knowing when to jump ahead in the story to write the parts that are clearest right now, even if it will be months before I can post them.

It has been a looong time since I've done any fandom things. And that is why I am doing the challenge. I've been participating in fandom in one way or another for as long as the Internet has existed, but the past eight years repeatedly bludgeoned over the head with real life and I either lacked either the time or the energy to really follow fannish things closely.

Now things have calmed down, I am getting back in. And the Snowflake Challenge? Community! Goals! A way to kick off fandom 2016! What's not to like? So, here I am.

(Eventually, I will get around to crossposting these entries at my LiveJournal. Baby steps, baby steps...)
