ETA: I know one of them got eaten by DW when I tried to post... It's too late to figure that out, so I will try to fix it tomorrow.

I've been brainstorming all day what to do for my day's post, struggling to come up with something good, and I finally decided to just go with a top 5 post. It's easy! It's versatile! It's themed!

Now, I know most ppl looking at this post are not going to have any idea what it is from the title. So, some explanations are in order.

Not really a Great Big Transit Adventure this time because I wimped out and cabbed down. Possible rain, possible subway tsuris, and in the event, College blocked off for filming who knows what. Cost me a bit more than usual because I had no fives and because Construction bloody everywhere. Anyway, one crown and one filling later, I set out towards University as the film crews packed up their vans. There were one or two small problems like the machine not accepting my bank card when I went to top up my Presto pass but then doing it, and the gates not wanting to open for my card but then doing it. 4:30 is the start of rush hour and yes the car was packed but the hell with it, I put the brakes on my rollator and sat on that. Again, knew better than to try for the e-w subway and hoped the Dupont station's elevators were working, because I knew two of the escalators weren't. But no problems there either. No bus scheduled for another 22 minutes, but there's the Shoppers handy so got my mailing envelopes. Eventually, because guy at the head of the line was requiring all sorts of things, and the clerk apologized to me for the wait. Mind, with People These Days (signs everywhere saying harassment will not be tolerated, meaning people have been harassing) this may now be standard operating procedure.

So I headed back towards home, hungry because my mouth was still frozen and she said not to eat for another two hours. Got to Bathurst and decided, since I'm awash with money just now (tax refund arrived yesterday) to get me party sandwiches at yuppie Summerhill market. And OMG have the prices gone up. $25 for a box with minimal salmon pinwheels. I got the $16 common or garden variety which was still too much and nothing out of the ordinary. However they're soft, if tasteless, so that was dinner.  But shall not be going back there anytime soon,  and not just because of the prices. Place was full of yuppie moms and their impervious offspring, both of them being the only people in the world. Also a store that has to hire a security guard is not anywhere I want to be.

This week's prompt is replace.

Your response should be exactly 100 words long. You do not have to include the prompt in your response -- it is meant as inspiration only.

Please use the tag "prompt: #492 - replace" with your response.

Please put your drabble under a cut tag if it contains potential triggers, mature or explicit content, or spoilers for media released in the last month.

If you would like a template for the header information you may use this:

This was Robinson's first novel, one of a set of three set in future Orange County, Californias, exploring three different futures for America. The second one is about a future much like the present day, hyper-capitalist and dystopian. The third is set in an ecotopia which apparently involves lots of softball. (I've only read The Wild Shore, and gleaned this information from reviews of the others.) After reading The Ministry of the Future, I thought I'd give Robinson another try, and this book sounded most relevant to my personal interests. (I've attempted Years of Rice and Salt multiple times and never gotten very far in. It sounds so interesting!)

The Wild Shore is set about sixty years after the US was shattered by multiple neutron bombs, then quarantined by the rest of the world. It's now a bunch of extremely small, struggling towns which are kept separated from each other as the rest of the world uses satellite imagery to bomb them any time they attempt to do something like build railroad tracks. The California coast is patrolled by Japanese vessels who prevent them from sailing too far out. No one in the book has any idea who bombed the US or why, but given the quarantine I assume the US started the war and someone else finished it.

The book is narrated by Henry, who is 17 and lives in a village of 60. He hangs out with a bunch of mostly-indistinguishable other teenage boys. (I spent three-quarters of the book thinking Steve and Nicolin were two different boys. They are not. I wish writers wouldn't randomly call characters by their first or last name.) They fish and farm and trade with scavengers. Henry is the prize student of Tom, one of four elders who recall the pre-catastrophe days. It is immediately obvious that Tom's teachings are a mix of real and complete bullshit, but as the younger generation has no context or means of fact-checking, they tend to think it's either all true or all bullshit.

The village gets contacted by the remnants of San Diego, which wants to build a rail line and fight back against the quarantine. Henry gets sucked into this, with disastrous results.

This book is SLOW. I often like books that are mostly about daily life, but Henry's daily life was not that interesting - he spends a lot of time hanging out with boys and talking and thinking about girls and daddy issues, and you can get that in any contemporary novel about teenage boys. The only real character is Tom - everyone else is lightly sketched in at best. Girls and women are only present as girlfriends, potential girlfriends, and moms. (There's one girl who's the leader of the farmers, who are mostly women - the men are mostly fishers - but she doesn't get much to do.) The book was just barely interesting enough that I finished it, but it didn't end anywhere more interesting than the rest of it.

A cute pink kitty is playing with the Dreamwidth logo: Come join our celebration of Dreamwidth, April 25th to May 15th.
@3weeks4dreamwidth is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

Today, I'm sharing info about a new community that sounds like fun. [community profile] fanmix_monthly. I love doing fanmixes. I do them for characters, ships, even specific stories I'm working on, so I can listen while I write to set the mood.

They are doing a mini mix meme for the celebration. Description: comment with a fandom, ship, character, theme, etc. prompt and others will reply with a song(s) that remind them of that.

I've always made mine in a media player on my computer (and I had a couple on the now-defunct 8-Tracks site), but I do have one Sonny/Rico playlist here. I should re-create the ones I had on 8-Tracks, too. They were Torchwood, Jack/Ianto.

I realise I'm late to begin participating in [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth but I might as well start now. I thought about what I could post about every day (on days that I'm not posting anything else on my journal) and decided on discussing my avatars on Kingdom of Knuffel. Kingdom of Knuffel is a dressup game, virtual pet/adoptables site and forum community rolled into one. You earn points by chatting and raising virtual pets, and spend the points on dressup items for your customisable avatar.

This avatar is my great success. It's titled 'Tea Lime' and it won first place!!! in the May 2022 Monthly Avatar Contest at Kingdom of Knuffel.

Things I'm proud of:
Matching the Stripes and Hearts background with the Heart Cup.
The necklace looks like it's a part of the dress because the pendant sits right at the center of the bow. Speaking of bows, the dress has a bow, as does the hair, as does the avatar's frame. Even the necklace has a tiny bow.
The way I got the green skin with the white face was by using an item called Clown Facepaint on the Peridot Skin. (Otherwise she'd be green from face to torso.) I thought the violet blush looked nice even though there's no violet in the rest of the avatar, so that her face wouldn't be stark, uniform pale.
I chose the Alseid Lips, which I think makes it look like she just blew on her drink or took a sip. It's just the right, trace amount of tiny pucker.

For Fandom Trumps Hate this year, I offered to record podfic. The winner of my auction requested podfic that was:

  • for the BeefLeaf ship for Tian Guan Ci Fu
  • 5-10k words long
  • had a happy or hopeful ending

And I am having a little trouble finding such a fic that the author has given permission for people to make podfic for.

If anyone has any recommendations, that would be very helpful. (And self recommendations are more than welcome!)

List of entries )

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (all three spots) in order to be counted. First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Second Place: 88. Another Fic Title
Third Place: 47. Finally a third fic title goes here

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. So I had two auctions, but also accepted second highest bidder on both, and both took me up on that.

Fic 1 is, as of a couple hours ago, complete and sitting in my unrevealed collection so I can re-read it in a few days.

Fic 2 (which will be multi-fandom short fics) has 1 completed fic, and is in brain-marinating mode for the next bit.

Fic 3 (which will have multiple fics in a single fandom) has a completed fic and the beginning of the 2nd.

Fic 4 will likely be the next one I finish, as it needs maybe 2 scenes to be done and join fic 1 in the unrevealed collection.

My intent is to complete ALL of them first, and then release them over the span of a week or so. Hopefully in May. I have continually reminded myself they are not due until Dec 31 this year, that I can take the time, and taking the time leads to better end results.

I finished the Genius 10 OVA and, first of all, that was way more Niou than I was expecting. Everyone makes use of Niou's mutant morphing powers! Second, my favourite part was when Ryoma decided he'd had enough with how shitty the training camp was and decided to do something that would get him kicked out.

Every time blond pirate whatshisface went on about how tennis can be fatal I was like . . . you guys know this is not a blood sport, right. This is just tennis. The superpowers aren't the silliest part of Prince of Tennis; the silliest part is when people try to kill each other over the net.

Ryoma's memory problems make me wonder if he has a brain injury?? Though I guess the answer to that is not to think about it too deeply.

I did actually really like what the training camp did with Rikkai - basically by surrounding them with other people and getting them out of their zone of dysfunction, they all started to become less fucked up (except for Jackal I guess who was very busy crying about Marui not playing tennis with him LOL). I also liked Yanagi actively making a step to do that on purpose by making sure Kirihara stayed in the camp and he got to go off and have Data Bros time with Inui, because he's recognised it's good to reconnect with people outside the zone of Rikkai dysfunction

I also like that it removed Tezuka from the story partway through, even though I like Tezuka, because it was interesting to have him out of the story in a way where he wasn't even a looming spectre threatening to return, to see what some of the characters were like without him.

The selection of characters for the U-17 team is not really a group of characters I think will be particularly interesting together, but we'll see when I get to all that, I guess.
