...that many, many, many of the transphobic comrades in arms who share her Big ThoughtsTM on the immutability of sex also hold very specific attitudes about the immorality of:
  • single motherhood,
  • working mothers,
  • women's participation in public spaces,
  • social programs, and
  • family planning
among others? Setting aside the odiousness of her recent statements for their own sake, it's amazing to me that she's oblivious to the fact, from a completely self-interested standpoint, the people who share these views on sex and gender are not her friends.

To inject some levity into the situation, the current wank at least gave us this from Forbes, whose author seems as upset that HP fans are Interrogating This Text From The Wrong Perspective as he is by Rowling's bullshittery.

Never change, Fandom.

...taking bets on how soon the southern Baptists et.al. will start in on how Dumbledore's new(ly outed) sexuality has horrible, horrible implications for his relationship with young Harry (Oh, the Un-holy Improprietiez! Surely teh gei man is a sexual predator!), or starting that bit of wank myself.

...on Why I found the last book so anticlimactic, featuring discussions on the Nature of Good and Evil, unapologetically Snape-centric Examples, and several Special Bonus Tangents. )

So I guess that, in a nutshell, is why I feel so let down by HP. They're the longest books I've read about "the battle between good and evil" that never actually bother to deal with questions of good and evil, or especially how both can coexist in the same person.

My greatest disappointment with DH is the fact that JKR has once again devoted the majority of the text to answering all the wrong questions and introducing a bunch of new concepts, characters, and backstory that she has no room to develop.

ACCIO SPOILERS! )

More to come later, but I'm expecting a phone call.

Moi: That was one hot, steaming turdpile of a book.
Mon Pere: That bad huh?
Moi: I can't fucking believe it. It was horrible! It was unbelievably lame! Everything that could have gone wrong, did! I could have written a better final book.
Mon Pere: ...
              You probably have.
Moi: Oh, boy...

I wonder when he first caught on.

...and it was the best one, along with three. Don't know if they can call it "Order Of The Phoenix," since the Order didn't really make an appearance, but my moe regulars (Snape, Malfoy Sr., Sirius) were all in fine form.

I might actually go see this one again tomorrow.

Reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has become something of a seasonal rite for me, as it's just long enough to be tidily finished during an international flight. The neat thing about this book is that I dream alternate endings every time I put it down to nap - even now, when I know how the storyline ends. Neater yet is that I remember the dreams upon waking, which I've never done for any other book (assuming that I have dreams for any other book).

One of my favorite dreams to date involved Norrell and Snape commiserating over the sorry state of English magic. In the cheerfully contradictory manner of dreams they were both present in the flesh in the Hurtfew Abbey library and sitting in wingchairs by a fireplace in Snape's dungeon chambers, Snape having summoned Norrell's ghost for a chat one evening.

I wish I could remember exactly what they'd been talking about, as it would make a killer piece of fanfic.

It has also come to my attention, via the kanji on the Kinokunia price tag, that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a children's/picture book. This occassioned a moment of Bwah? on my part before it occurred to me that I would rather children read books like this than, say, Butterfly Kisses.

Kore de ijou desu.
