Reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has become something of a seasonal rite for me, as it's just long enough to be tidily finished during an international flight. The neat thing about this book is that I dream alternate endings every time I put it down to nap - even now, when I know how the storyline ends. Neater yet is that I remember the dreams upon waking, which I've never done for any other book (assuming that I have dreams for any other book).

One of my favorite dreams to date involved Norrell and Snape commiserating over the sorry state of English magic. In the cheerfully contradictory manner of dreams they were both present in the flesh in the Hurtfew Abbey library and sitting in wingchairs by a fireplace in Snape's dungeon chambers, Snape having summoned Norrell's ghost for a chat one evening.

I wish I could remember exactly what they'd been talking about, as it would make a killer piece of fanfic.

It has also come to my attention, via the kanji on the Kinokunia price tag, that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a children's/picture book. This occassioned a moment of Bwah? on my part before it occurred to me that I would rather children read books like this than, say, Butterfly Kisses.

Clark participated in an online "seminar" at Crooked Timber last month (http://crookedtimber.org/2005/11/29/jonathan-strange-mr-norrell-seminar-introduction/). Some interesting reading there.

Don't you just love/hate dreams like that? Of course, there's nothing to stop you from trying to write that fic! Snape would be so perfect to expound on the "sorry state of English magic." :)
