Less than two days to the New Year, so I might as well get started on the "year in review" memes. Seeing as Snowflake Challenge also starts on the first, and as I put together a list of goals as part of this year's challenge, let's see how I did. Spoiler alert: it's a mixed bag. )

Well. One of the two goals I set for myself in Challenge #15 was to complete all my outstanding Snowflake Challenge entries by the first week of February. And I may be 6 days behind schedule, but I've done it!

In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some favorites from the 2022 Winter Round of [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles:

The Importance of Flair by Puimoo
Not all of Loki's plots work out., Thor (MCU), 300 words
- This powerhouse of a triple drabble is a diabolically good character study that had me cackling by the second sentence.

mead with venom (no ale to pour) by UniqueChimera
Loki watches his brother battle the Hulk , Thor (MUC), 104 words
- A subtle interpretation of a moment from Thor: Ragnarok.

Taste Test by Leldorai
“It’s a surprise, Bait. Be a little patient!”, Dragon Prince, 200 words
- This delightful slice-of-life double drabble features a perfect Bait. (And how can anyone resist Bait?)

Classical Reception by Ermingarden
Help, help, Arthur's being repressed! (Sexually.), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 700 words
- This is unique, ambitious, and a ton of fun to read.

Challenge #12

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I’ve kept mulling this one over during the last two three weeks, but my answer hasn’t changed: I would absolutely bring back Okawa Toru as Roy Mustang’s voice actor in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I love Miki Shinichiro too (I have slightly fewer than a bazillion drama CDs and PC games in which he’s starred), but for me, Okawa is the voice of Roy Mustang. The only voice. The fact that he didn't voice Roy Mustang in Brotherhood is the reason why I have yet to watch Brotherhood. I'm not often this attached to specific individuals in specific roles, but in this case I absolutely am and I would love for there to be a third FullMetal Alchemist remake in which he reprises this role.

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment to this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I am challenging myself (and anyone else who's interested) to two challenges this year:

  • Complete all this year's Snowflake Challenges by the first week of February, and
  • Post one fanwork to AO3 a month, even if it's just a drabble.

  • Both of these are things I intend to do anyway, so it's a bit of a gimme. ✨ But it will be a lot of fun regardless.

    Challenge #13

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Years ago, I sent ma soeur the first season of Adventure Time on DVD. ) She is definitely a fanwork that touched my heart 💖 and one that brought our fandom interaction over Adventure Time full circle.

    Challenge #7

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Not so much a fandom resource as a general one I often use for fandom purposes: Bandcamp, and ten free-to-stream albums on it that are great music to write to. )

Catching up on the challenges I've missed so far, today I tackle:

    Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My initial reaction to this was, “Nope, AUs are not my thing,” but as it turns out, it’s a bit more complicated than that. )

    Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

    Challenge #5

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

There are so many things I could write for this, but if I had the time, energy, and resources I would love to:
    • Publish a proper translation of Sugiura Shiho's Silver Diamond. The whole series. One that conveys all the humor and subtlety the TokyoPop attempt didn't. Because oh my gosh, Sugiura's writing is so good and there is just so much to sink your teeth into in it.

    • And then ideally follow that up with a translation of Koori no Mamono no Monogatari because that one is great too.

    • And since I might as well go for the hat trick: translate Akizuki Koh's Ocho Romanse and Yukimura-dono historical fantasy/BL novels. (These would be a lot harder, because so much of the pleasure of reading them is tied up in the language: pronouns and politeness registers that don't exist in English. But it would be a fun challenge.)

    Challenge #4

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

    • I would love for Dreamwidth to be as active (and interactive) during the other 10 months of the year as it is during [community profile] snowflake_challenge and [community profile] sunshine_challenge! To that end, I am also going to try to be more interactive more regularly throughout the year.

    • Rec new fandoms to me! If there's a novel, movie, series, game, manga, whathaveyou you think everyone should be into, come tell me about it.

    • Come squee with me about my micro fandoms: M.J. Carter’s Blake and Avery Series, Paraic O’Donnell’s The House on Vesper Sands, Akizuki Koh’s Japanese BL novels, and any of Sugiura Shiho’s manga series.

    • Be my writing cheerleading/pantskicking partner! I’m doing the wordcount challenge in this year’s [community profile] getyourwordsout and I’m going to need it!

    • If anyone could point me to an archive of the Snape Fuh-Q-Fest third wave fics, I would be eternally grateful. I would love to recover some of the stuff from that running.

    • I would also love to have pointers toward a program that imports or archives entries from Livejournal. If you have any recs for something like this, please let me know.

    Challenge #2

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

    Reading goals:
    • As always, read at least 100 books cover-to-cover, something I have only ever failed to do twice in the last two decades.
    • End the year with fewer than 180 unread books in my place. Right now I have 201.
    • Read three books for every new book I acquire.
    • Index all my book reviews so that they’re discoverable. I did this religiously until 2009; it’s time to get back into the habit.

If I make a to-do type list there’s a pretty good chance I won’t stick to it for long. Last year I put together a a list of 50 books to see how many of the books, out of those I felt I might like to read last year on January 8th, I actually did read by December 31st—and I read 30 of them! That’s a pretty good record, so here’s this year’s list

    Activity goals:
    • Do pilates, stretching, or yoga more regularly.
    • Sit zazen more regularly.
    • Strength train at least once a week.
    • Go to BJJ regularly once sessions resume.
    • Take a 3 to 5 mile walk most days of the week.

    Creativity goals:
    • Fill one lined journal.
    • Fill at least ½ of one art journal.
    • Finish my Baldur’s Gate playthrough.
    • Learn at least ten new Irish flute tunes, solidly.
    • Make icons! For a long time, I've been content to use two, but I'd like to have some more.
    • Paint more minis.

    Language goals
    • Finish Transparent Languages Indonesian.
    • Work through one Japanese language resource from beginning to end.
    • Finish Transparent Languages Korean.
    • Work through one resource in another language from beginning to end.

    Writing goals:
    • Complete [community profile] getyourwordsout. In previous years I signed up for the habit challenge; this year I’m doing wordcount. I’d like to hit my word count goal exclusively through fiction writing. I haven’t yet decided if I want that to be finished product (i.e., edited, completed stories) or just total words on a page.
    • Complete [community profile] inkingitout.
    • Post at least one piece of fiction to AO3 a month (even if it is only a drabble).
    • Participate in at least three exchanges.
