One of my main motivations for writing fanfic is to try to explain contradictions or discrepancies, or expand on lacunae in canon, so I've done this a bunch. Here are five examples, in reverse chronological order.

Flight of the Prince
Harry Potter; Gen
Written the day after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out, I wrote these two linked drabbles explain why there was no portrait of Snape as headmaster: a plot hole rowling and her editors missed until fans pointed it out.

From Birth
Marvel Cinematic Universe; Gen
I wrote this giftfic for Worldbuilding Exchange 2017. My recipient had asked for Loki and the relationship between magic and science, to which I fleshed out Odin bringing Loki to Asgard, his relationship to Freya, and how that led him to make a certain major decision.

Frank was my personal compensation for Calcutta
Blake & Avery: Mature
This is the most headcanon-y example of the five. I wrote it to give some additional backstory to his relationship with Frank--a major catalyst for everything that comes after in the series--and it's the unofficial starting point to most of the fics I've written in this fandom.

Fool's Errand
The Goblin Emperor series; Teen & up
Written before The Grief of Stones published, because I had an inkling that Subpraeceptor Azhanharad was not as one dimensional as Celehar seemed to think he was. I enjoyed giving Azhanharad a very awkward reason for being so uncomfortable around Celehar, and one that Celehar himself would never in a million years guess.

The Magic of Childhood
Baldur's Gate I & II; Gen
I wrote this triple drabble to set out why Imoen never evinced any magical aptitude in BGI when she suddenly has it in spades in BGII.
