...taking the fan out of fandom.
The general craziness of life has taken this fan out of fandom for most of the past three years, but fandom still appears, as yet, to be strong within me.
I had dinner the other day with three Japanese friends. During the course of conversation Y-chan mentioned in passing that her younger sister was having a bad week, her car having been "お釜された"--for the third time this year, no less--a few days previously.
I expressed sympathy and asked how much her sister had had to fork out to have it fixed. This was followed by several moments of confusion both on the part of the Y-chan and the other two people at the table before we worked out that yes, the younger sister's car had been rear-ended and that "お釜された", literally "draq queened", was a term coined by and used within Y-chan's family to describe said misfortune but not, as far as she knew, anywhere else.
Everyone was very eager to know how I'd understood what Y-chan was talking about. Needless to say, I was not about to explain why this had seemed so 当たり前 to me.
So, yeah. Hurrah for fandom bringing people together.
