In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A big part of fandom for many people is creating things: fic, icons, playlists, vids. This can pose certain barriers to entry--the cost to purchase a software license or concerns about feeding the big tech surveillance industrial complex, for example. So here's a list of three free, open source resources I've found to be good alternatives to their commercial counterparts.

Audacity: Audacity is an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.

GIMP: GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems.

LibreOffice: LibreOffice is a free and powerful office suite, and a successor to OpenOffice.org.

Yay, open source stuff!

I know a lot of people have a visceral reaction to the GIMP's name, and was really happy to see that there's a fork named Glimpse out there: https://glimpse-editor.github.io

I feel it makes it easier to rec a really excellent piece of software.

I've used both Audacity and LibreOffice, can confirm they're great. (I'm terrible at graphics for the most part, so GIMP isn't for me.)

I am definitely not a power user for any variety of image editing software, but it doesn't stop me from trying. 😅 And awesome, another Audacity and LibreOffice fan!

i use openoffice right now but i'd read they're not supporting it any more (or updating it? in any case, it will eventually be obsolete), so I think libreoffice is in my future. i didn't know what i'd use as a replacement, so thank you for the rec! i'm a big fan of open source.

I try to use and support open source alternatives as much as I can, both because I like the ethic, and because on a practical level I find they are much less bloated and buggy than the license-required alternatives.

I started out OpenOffice too, and found making the jump to Libre pretty intuitive. Anyway, always nice to meet another open source fan!
