The parts of The Starless Sea I liked best were essentially short stories interspersed within the main storylines. Morgenstern would probably be better as a short story author. The format would prevent her from the verbal bloat and preciousness that disagrees with me so badly in her novels.
And do read Djinn Patrol! It really is a great book, one I'm still mulling over a week later.
