It is freaking cold outside.

What I Just Finished Reading

The Trial of Thor – Mike Carey, Alan Davis, Peter Milligan
Being primarily a collection of single issues. So far, I’ve read the first one, which is quasi-origin story set in ancient Egypt, and which I probably would have enjoyed more if I’d been able to set aside the historical inaccuracies. (Which, it’s a superhero comic, but there you have it.)

Vote Loki – Christopher Hastings, Langdon Foss, Paul McCaffrey
This had a great premise that, by pulling its punches, it ultimately failed to capitalize on.

What I Am Currently Reading

The Virtu – Sarah Monette
Seasonal comfort reading.

The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien
More seasonal comfort reading. I was so young the first time I read The Hobbit I didn’t know many of the words in it. It occurs to me that all the foreign languages I’ve picked up since are probably motivated by a desire to relive the experience of brute forcing my way through a page of incomprehensible text until it suddenly makes sense.

What I'm Reading Next
This week I picked up Alix Harrow’s The Ten Thousand Doors of January and Andrew Caldecott’s Rotherweird, which is one of the novels I’d checked out in London. Natasha Pulley, Susan Cooper, and Ciaran Carson are also likely possibilities for near term reads.

I loved the hobbit when I first read it when I was a teen. I ended up rereading it before the movie came out, it is a truly great story that you can read over and over.

I will be interested to see how you like The Ten Thousand Doors of January because it has been on my TBR list for awhile and I keep pushing back to read other books.
