What I Just Finished Reading
Desdemona and the Deep – C.S.E. Cooney
This deeply satisfying novel punches far above its 250-odd pages and has made a place for itself on my reread pile. A definite recommendation.
Deep Work – Cal Newport
Listicle common sense pretending it’s profound thinking. The book does a fair job of laying out said common sense for those who need the refresher. But if you've paid money to read this, you’ve been suckered.
What I Am Currently Reading
The Ninefox Gambit – Yoon Ha Lee
Chapters three through seven this week. I remember my first time reading when Cheris, having recently been brevetted, gives the command that will have her swarm arrive at the Fortress of Scattered Needles in 21.3 days—and wondered if that multiple of the heretical seven had any significance in the hexarchate’s 10-day week.
The Master of Blacktower – Barbara Michaels
Holy shit, I love this book. It’s got truly eerie gothic elements, language that evokes Victorian era literature while avoiding the elements that often make reading the real thing tedious, engaging characters with sly—but not anachronistic—senses of humor, and the romance plot that schooled me in what slow burn is.
What I'm Reading Next
Tor has provided me with K Arsenault Rivera’s The Tiger’s Daughter, which was a nice surprise as the novel has caught my eye on several bookstore visits over the last few months.
