What I Just Finished Reading
Blackfish City – Sam Miller
Miller is not afraid to kill major characters, without warning, which I like. I also enjoyed the characters’ diverse ethnicities and family structures. That said, the story itself was largely unsatisfying—in particular, one character’s psychological 180, executed in the service of a plot corner Miller backed himself into, left me cold. End verdict: while more enjoyable than other scifi/futuristic novels I’ve read recently, I won’t reread this book or any sequels.
神隠し– 佐伯泰英 (Kamikakushi – Saeki Yasuhide)
Finished at last. Shibui Japanese oyaji are not my thing, but I very much enjoyed the period atmosphere, and Saeki’s descriptions of combat are excellent.
What I Am Currently Reading
Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics – Dan Harris
Harris’ 10% Happier is the meditation book I recommend to people who aren’t quite ready for Brad Warner’s level of earthiness. This follow-on volume, which goes into greater detail on various meditation techniques, is shaping up to be just as good as its predecessor.
The Beast’s Heart – Liefe Shallcross
A quarter of the way through, this novel is shaping up to be good bedtime reading—neither aggravatingly bad nor so gripping I want to stay up later than advisable to keep reading.
What I'm Reading Next
My plan is to wrap up Fire Logic, provided snowboarding doesn’t preempt my normal reading schedule.
