What I Just Finished Reading
Smoke and Summons – Charlie Holmberg
Not my favorite thing Holmberg has ever written, but still pretty good all the same. She’s built an interesting world with some pretty gripping chase and suspense scenes, and I liked both of the main characters (which is not something I can say for the majority of my recent forays into YA).
What I Am Currently Reading
The Girl Who Drank the Moon – Kelly Barnhill
A little further in, I think I’m beginning to see why this won a Newbery. The plot hasn't really kicked in yet, but it's already frightfully charming.
Intermediate Korean – Andrew Sangpil Byon
I’m a little more than a third of the way through the book and knee deep in causal conjunctions.
Kabbalah – Tim Dedopulos
I have progressed to the chapter on individual sephira.
Fire Logic – Laurie J. Marks
This book is an odd creature. It’s narrated like a novel, but somehow evokes the same emotional response I'd have to well-written current events journalism. I feel happy or sad as Marks describes what's happening to the characters, but I've never lost myself in the experience of reading about them.
The Hidden Life of Trees – Peter Wohlebellen
Perhaps it reads better in the original German. In translation, I’m frustrated by Wohlebellen’s superficial treatment of potentially interesting topics and the inconsistency in what he chooses to anthropomorphize.
What I'm Reading Next
Assuming I can wrap up reading one or more of the above, I’ll start The Beast’s Heart.
