What I Just Finished Reading
The King of Elfland’s Daughter – Lord Dunsany
Peter Beagle’s The Last Unicorn borrowed a lot from this volume, but Dunsany did it much better. A good novel for anyone wanting an atmospheric, meditative read on the nature of dreams and obsessions.
Monstress vol. 2 – Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda
The Isle of Bones arc features some of the most beautiful illustration to appear in comics.
Monstress vol. 3 – Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda
The comic’s disparate storylines and characters begin to coalesce in this volume, which also features some brilliant action scenes.
The Beastkeeper – Cat Hellisen
This one was really something special; one of the best YA novels I’ve read in recent memory. Beyond that, I’m not going to say anything because I don’t want to spoil it for those who have yet to read it.
Veins of Gold – Charlie Holmberg
This wasn’t a bad book, but it didn’t grip me the way some of Holmberg’s other titles have. My favorite parts were the quiet descriptions of the protagonist’s domestic activities, which were so nicely done it made the magic and love story feel tacked on.
ちはやふる vol. 1 – 末次 由紀 / (Chihayafuru vol. 1 – Suetsugu Yuki)
A cute story about three sixth graders—the ugly duckling younger sister of a fashion model, a spectrum-y boy from a poor family, and an overachiever with a demanding mother—who stumble into the world of competitive karuta. It was enjoyable, but I’m not really motivated to check out subsequent volumes.
What I Am Currently Reading
Tithe – Holly Black
Tithe features some truly lovely descriptive writing and when I first read it ages ago I immediately identified with her protagonists’ world of trailer parks, dead end gas station jobs, and couch hopping between various relatives’ hovels. Rereading the book when that’s no longer my daily reality, I find I have much less patience with that culture, though it rings no less true today.
[ ] - [ ]
For reasons.
Uprooted – Naomi Novik
Making another push through this one; stalling out as before once the protagonists reach the capital.
What I'm Reading Next
I'll probably pick Warner's The Truth About Fat and a fiction title up.

And I will cop to purchasing extra copies of the issues with my favorite panels in them to disassemble and hang on the walls.

I read Monstress 1 (birthday gift from hubby) ... and about to read vol. 2 (Christmas gift from hubby) he laments that the set will only take him as far as either Valentine's Day or our Anniversary, and not even till Mother's Day ... ahahaha!
... and I'm the same every now and again I will pick up a Holly Black from the library and re-read it just cos' I can. I love her story telling.
I like this list a lot (I've seen a little of the Chihayafuru anime - and it's quite lovely - unfortunately ... time so I can't devote much time and effort to new fandoms really ...
However I was wondering if you've come across the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness - I caught a bit of it on the box - it's been turned into a series of sorts called A Discovery of Witches - but wondering if anyone I knew had any idea what the books might be like ...?
... anyway Monstress - looking forward to opening Vol 2 now. ^_^

Holly Black is a mixed bag for me. I love about half of her books (including the Tithe trilogy) but the other half are a solid meh.
I need to get back into newer anime/manga. Do you have any other recs?
As far as Harkness goes, I tried a sample of her stuff when Amazon had the first book for 90 percent off. I decided not to buy--if memory serves, she crams a gazillion adjectives and adverbs into every sentence. But I know a lot of people really like her books, so maybe she's worth revisiting again.
Especially, as you say, since Monstress isn't published nearly fast enough.
