I hope everyone who celebrates Thingsgiving had a lovely one.
What I Just Finished Reading
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – Richard Armitage
I very much enjoyed Armitage’s translation, but the end of the poem irked as always. To whit:
Gawain: This magic garter I got off some dude’s wife who kept showing up in my bedroom every night totally saved me from your murderous ways!
Green Knight: Surprise! That was my wife, who was totally put up to it to see if you’d be enough of a dick to sleep with someone else’s woman.
Poem’s Author: Women are such duplicitous, conniving shrews, amirite? Sir Gawain will keep this fact in mind this as long as he lives. Finis.
Me: ...
The Dream Hunters – Neil Gaiman & Amano Yoshitaka
As always, a perfect atmospheric read for the long, dark evenings at the end of December.
Pandamonium – Dan Crisp
A purple octopus made a cameo at the beginning, which is really all I need to be happy.
I Need a New Butt! – Dawn McMillan
As silly as it sounds. Little kids go nuts over this one.
Dragons Love Tacos – Adam Rubin & Daniel Salmieri
Cute and ridiculous.
Little Owl’s Night – Divya Srinivasan
A favorite of mine for its atmospheric prose and beautiful illustrations.
The Polar Express – Chris Van Allsburg
Because, hey, it’s Christmas and I can still hear the bell.
What I Am Currently Reading
Tithe – Holly Black
I’ve been wanting to revisit this one ever since wrapping up The Cruel Prince.
The Midnight Court – Ciaran Carson
Next on my list of Carson translations. As always, I’m enjoying the historical notes that kick off the volume.
The King of Elfland’s Daughter – Lord Dunsany
Dunsany is one of the pioneers of what I think of as “ornate fantasy prose.” If murderous enchanted forests or witches who farm thunderbolts are your thing, this is definitely a volume you should check out.
Veins of Gold – Charlie Holmberg
I find Holmberg’s books fall into two categories: ones I devour in a day, and ones that bog down a bit halfway through. Veins of Gold belongs in the latter category.
Outlaws of Sherwood – Robin McKinley
I think this is one of the novels that put McKinley on the map, but I somehow never got around to reading it before now.
[ ] - [ ]
For reasons.
Hat Full of Sky – Terry Pratchett
All the love for Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mac Feegle.
What I'm Reading Next
Probably volumes 2 and 3 of Liu and Takeda’s Monstress.
これで以上です。
