Egads, it's been a long time. Shouldn't there be an upper limit on how busy RL can get?
What I Just Finished Reading
Single White Monk – Shozan Jack Haubner
Easily one of the best books I've read this year. Haubner's humor is bitingly sharp, and it' been quite some time since a book made me cry like this one.. His discussion of the fallout from Joshu Sasaki's sexual misconduct is honest and more topical than ever, but nevertheless glosses over just how abusive much of what went on was.
What I Am Currently Reading
[Placeholder] – [Placeholder]
Forreasons Yuletide.
The Waking Land – Callie Bates
Bates is mashing up Outlander and Uprooted. It's an interesting idea and there is some lovely descriptive language, but these elements are ultimately spoiled by cardboard characterizations.
The Enlightened Gene – Arri Eisen & Yungdrung Konchok
A look at the intersection of Buddhism with biology and neuroscience. (Incidentally, my spellchecker wants to correct “neuroscience” to “pseudoscience.” We are truly living in a post-trump world.) I'm only a few chapters in, but very much enjoying it thus far.
Melusine – Sarah Monette
Dark and delightful. I am particularly enjoying Miss Thompson.
The Shepherd's Crown – Terry Pratchett
PTerry may have outlined this book, but the text itself was clearly ghostwritten. It reads like decent fanfic, but not like Pratchett.
Saga vol. 5 – Brian K. Vaughn & Fiona Staples
Vaughn's writing is self-consciously progressive, but it's still leaps and bounds ahead of his earlier titles, so I'll take it. Staples' art continues to amaze.
What I'm Reading Next
Most likely Saga volumes 6 and 7. Other than that, who knows?

Yeah, that's what it felt like to me, too. Well, I think there may have been some scenes he wrote himself -- the Nanny and Granny ones, I'm thinking. But a lot of it read as a barely fleshed out outline anyway.
Melusine is an interesting book/series. Hope you continue to enjoy it.
