Challenge #15
Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.
PJ Harvey went on tour last year. It is not possible to overstate how huge a role her music has played in my life. Hearing Rid of Me for the first time in '93 changed my life and what I wanted music to do and be.
I'd seen her live once, in 1995. She was an opener, which meant she played most of To Bring You My Love, Mansize, and 50ft Queenie, and that was it. It was still phenomenal. So you best believe I got my tickets to the 2024 show the day they went on sale, because I was not going to miss it for the world.
Because the tour opened here, no one had any idea what to expect. I was pretty sure she was going to play a lot of I Inside the Old Year Dying and maybe some stuff from Stories From The City.
Well. Not only did she play stuff from I Inside the Old Year Dying, she played the entire thing straight through. I'd read-and loved—Orlam when it came out, but it was something else entirely to actually hear it. Her stage presence was amazing. Her voice was amazing. John Parish and the rest of the band were amazing. When they finished the album, they played a few songs from Let England Shake, and that was amazing. And then.
And then.
They played Angelene. And then Man-Size. And Dress. And C'mon Billy and Down By The Water and To Bring You My Love, and I about lost my mind. I did not think she would play one of those songs, let alone all of them. It was beyond joyous. It was transcendent.
She'd brought her own vintage soundboard on tour with her from England (which I learned because we were standing next to it and an audio engineering otaku had an extended and fascinating discussion about it with her sound guy before the start of the show). Standing near the soundboard is always a good bet because you hear what the audio guys are hearing. The sound was outstanding, so good that it even sounds great on the recording I made on my phone. (Best of all, my phone somehow recorded the concert without also recording me and everyone else in my vicinity singing along at the top of our lungs, because we were very much doing that.)
So not only did I have that experience, but I can listen to it at will. And if I (or you!) want to see it, some wonderful soul has posted of video of the entire show here.

i just listened to "down by the water" and it was so haunting. i'm happy you got to listen to her live! i can only imagine what that was like. i've only ever been to a kpop concert and it was wholly different from listening to a recorded audio!
listening to "to bring you my love" now and whenever her voice goes deep i'm just like 🙏

I've never been to a kpop concert but I'd love to go--the energy and excitement would be so great! Who did you get to see?
