Half a decade ago I bought a distressed "cactus" at Trendy Local Boutique. When I say "distressed", I mean this thing was literally one leaf on a twig. I took it home, identified it as a night blooming cereus, put it in a proper pot, and gave it a nice spot right by the window.

It has obliged me by growing great guns ever since. It has even survived the Great Houseplant Apocalypse of 2024, when a combination of triple-degree days, heavier than normal AC use, and fluctuating humidity levels have taken out dozens of beloved houseplants, from African violets to ZZ plants and everything in between.

Today, I noticed that not only has it survived, it is even getting ready to bloom:

I'm really excited about this. It has (knock on wood) never been an unhappy plant: it's currently about 4 feet tall and still putting out tons of new leaves even as some of them are burned due to the heat. But it's never yet flowered. The blooms are supposed to smell lovely. I'll be keeping an eye on this one over the next several evenings to make sure I don't miss it.

Oh hooray! That's amazing!

the Great Houseplant Apocalypse of 2024

Yeah, I have a few where I am doing my best but oh my gods, the weather. Even a few of the plants that normally do not give a shit now have opinions.

Like, you were perfectly fine being in that spot and watered weekly for the last three months, and this morning you are somehow suddenly not and you are also dead.

Mood.

(And also the vine I got from work a year ago which just up and decided to drop half its leaves which is apparently a thing it sometimes does but also means it is probably unhappy in one or more of several ways which I will now likely guess wrong.)

That's wonderful!

I am only familiar with that plant because I just read about it in a Mrs. Pollifax book!! Apparently it blooms around midnight, and lasts just a short time, so I hope you get to see it.

That is so exciting! I always get the same way when our dragon fruit plant blooms because it is only every once in a while, and it only last for half a day.

ooooh. I'm so jealous!

My new neighbors are huge plant geeks. I haven't met them yet, but they have a whole milk crate garden and tons of plants out along their part of the porch.

Well, I haven't met them yet, since I work nights and am comatose during the day. But yes, Jenn and Kat say they seem cool.
