Barely a week passed between the festival and our next live music outing: Bully, Franz Ferdinand, and Pixies.

Which just so happened to fall on the same day as Capital Pride so of course we did that too. Last year's was great, but this year really felt like things had fully returned to pre-pandemic vibrancy and it was just. Such. A. Good. Time. Like, just an excellent crowd vibe and such a high to be around.

Of course, we knew the parade was going on (we were there!) but somehow never made the connection between "Parade going on" and "We will of course walk to the venue tonight", which resulted in us having to backtrack (mumble mumble) miles because the parade route mirrors the route to the venue, which in turn made us (mumble mumble) minutes late to meet our friends for dinner.

This in turn made us late for the opener, Bully. On the one hand, I was bummed about this: it would have been cool to see a group whose debut I got a full decade ago. On the other hand, I liked the debut fine, but not enough to get any of the bona fide albums that succeeded it (and in fact had planned to decide whether I would get them or not based on the live show that we didn't end up seeing). Hopefully, someone will post a clip or two to YT.

Franz Ferdinand was a great deal of fun. This is another band that released pretty much all of its catalogue while I was living in Japan, where 100 percent or higher tariffs on CDs limited the amount of musical exploration I was willing to do sound unheard, as it were. But I knew all the singles and had absorbed enough of the albums by osmosis that it was very enjoyable to hear live. And they were reproducing the music live: no pre-recorded backing tracks or hidden musicians here, as far as I could tell.

But by far the best part of the show was the moment when the GC turned to me and said, "Why didn't they play 'Float On'?"

And then, the Pixies. I'd seen them before, opening for Weezer, but this time I was both far closer to the stage and they were headlining, meaning I got to hear them perform a proper, full length set. It was, obviously, phenomenal. To my disappointment, they did not play No. 13 Baby (which I have yet to see live), but they opened with Gouge Away (!!!) and the set also included Cactus, Caribou, Vamos, Planet of Sound, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Bone Machine (!!!), Where Is My Mind, and Hey (which I have now seen both Pixies and Dick Valentine perform).

If that were not excellent enough, we randomly ran into two friends whom we hadn't seen since before the pandemic, and then ran into another set of friends whom we we also hadn't see since before the pandemic. So all in all, just a stellar night.
