The awesome? Actually winning one of the seats to the uni's screening of Mei Lanfang* and Chen Kaige's speech following the movie. Even more awesome? Meeting Chen Hong and getting to talk to her about the film.
The sadness? Forgetting to bring my freaking camera.
As far as the movie goes, it was...hm. I definitely like Farewell My Concubine much better. Mei Lanfang is gorgeous visually and aurally, and the cast are amazing individually (especially Sun Honglei and Yueh Xiaotan) but there's very little chemistry between the characters. The pacing is also uneven: the first hour of this 150-minute movie focuses on a few weeks of Mei's career, although the plot encompasses forty-eight years of his life. That said, my evaluation of the film improved considerably after hearing Chen's explanations of certain scenes and what he was trying to convey overall. If anyone out there is planning on seeing Mei Lanfang, I'd recommend reading an interview or two prior to going.
