And onward we proceed, into Episode 1.05.

Which was another filler ep, but the amazing thing is, it was executed so well I didn't mind. The nutty king was delightfully nutty; I really had the feeling he was off his rocker--dangerously so, and it's a lot more difficult to keep viewers off their guard than it is characters in the show. And again, may I be allowed to state how much I appreciate a kids' show that doesn't moralize or paint in broad shades of black and white? 'Cause any other show, Katara and Sokka would have been chewing Aang out for getting them into that bind, and here? No blame. No recrimation. And no Aang saying, "Well, yeah, but you guys agreed to it too!" He got them into trouble and then he got them out. End of story. Nice. Plus, I should have so seen that bit at the end coming, and I didn't. Which just goes to show: they kept me so involved with the storyline in the present that I didn't tune out speculating. Although, I could have done without the old man pit hair.

And Episode 1.06.
Which was another seen-it-before done in such a way that it seemed pretty fresh. What really impressed me here was the consistent record Avatar is setting for having its protagonists take responsibility for the results of their actions, even the unintended consequences. So Katara, with the best of intentions, gets someone arrested? She goes to get him out, simple as that. No "But I didn't mean for that to happen!" excusing herself here. The psychology of the prisoners on the rig was pretty realistic as well. And that final shot? Ooh...
