More with the thoughts on. What can I say? I've had a very loooong week at work in which to think about this stuff.
Over the past few days I've had loads of opportunities to talk with everyone and their little sister about HBP. Most people like it better than any of the other books (this includes me). Most people like it a whole lot better than any of the other books. This definitely includes me. In fact, it's the only book I like in its own right. I've been into the series thus far because it's a great framework on which to hang fanfic, but that was about it.
HBP finally lived up to the potential that's been tantalising me since book one, but which was never capitalized on before now. Six is dark. Dark, dark, dark. The story has matured. My problem with the first five is that I wanted badly for them to capitalise on the potential for darkness that was waiting in the wings. In other words, I wanted something for an older audience. (This is also the source of my dissatisfaction with Garth Nix's newer series. There's so much potential there, but it isn't being realised because the 'target age' is 9-12 and supposedly can't handle that sort of thing. Whatever. I was reading LotR at eight.) I remember thinking it was such a copout that Snape was obviously such a bastard (who could manage far worse insults than 'dunderhead') and that Voldy was going to have to do a lot worse than play squatter under someone's turban, and that Malfoy was always lamer than I thought a bully should be.
I think allusions to evil and nastiness are handled a lot more gracefully in book six. We don't explicitly hear anyone swearing, but it is happening. The scenes in the cave illustrate that Voldy and his methods are pretty damn scary; something I didn't really get from the earlier volumes. The magic on the whole has become more threatening and dangerous (can you imagine something like Sectumsepra in the first three books), and less cutesy.
Which is more in line with what I like to read. Which is why I like it better. Too bad there's only one more book to go.
On a completely unrelated note,
metal_dog5 just sent me a jpg of the new Bleach DVD cover. Joy. I do so love a bleeding Renji.
