Sometimes she comes up here to sit and be surrounded by the books, the television, PS2 - all the things they'd given him that apparently weren't enough.

What did I do wrong? she thinks.

Parents are always the most attentive to their firstborns, and she'd tried her best to make sure that he never wanted for anything.

I was a good parent, she thinks.

She'd thought he was repaying her by being a diligent student, an ideal son.

She thinks of all the nights when she was downstairs, slicing vegetables for dinner, while he was upstairs, writing down names.

This is so sad. The last line particularly, with the contrast between her world and his, is heartbreaking.
