What I Just Finished Reading

F-Bomb – Lauren McKeon
McKeon is a talented writer with an engaging style, and I blew through this book in two days. That said, F-Bomb is troublingly light on substance. McKeon takes as her subject various groups of women who oppose feminism, and while she assures us repeatedly that they’re wrong, she never gets around to explaining why they oppose feminism—even when she’s interviewing them. It’s a curious omission in a volume dedicated to the topic. The sections on intersectionality fare better, and McKeon is certainly invested in broadening feminism’s scope and relevance to a broader swath of humanity; indeed, so invested that she occasionally takes some disingenuous positions in support of that goal. All of this is making me sound like I dislike the book more than I did—I enjoyed the read, but I do wish it offered a more in-depth treatment of the topic.

What I Am Currently Reading

The Vegetarian – Han Kang
Having failed to get my hands on the original I’ve folded and am reading this book in translation, which is actually quite well done. Twenty pages in, I believe I can see where the story is headed, but it’s well written all the same.

Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics – Dan Harris
Harris’ observation that realizing how frequently your mind wanders during meditation is a measure of success and not a bug, is a game changer.

龍宮 – 川上 弘美 (Ryugu – Kawakami Hiromi)
Kawakami’s To Step on a Snake is one of the eeriest things I’ve read, and the first short story in Ryugu, in which a possibly unhinged man meets another possibly unhinged man—who might also be an octopus—continues in this excellent tradition.
