Ah, Tokyo, where much porn fun was had by all.
I rolled into town at around 10:00 and kicked around Shinjuku's many fine commercial establishments until![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
cienna and takadainmate arrived. After locating a locker for the duo (no mean feat, as it was a holiday weekend), we hied to Nakano and its Mandarake, where much looking for FMA, Deathnote, and [insert cienna and takadainmate's obscure fandoms here] took place. Then it was off to Shibuya to hit up Tower records, Tsutaya, and of course Mandarake. Much purchasing of Deathnote doujinshi ensued.
As we were staying with a Japanese friend, we weren't going to get a chance to look at said doujinshi later in the evening, so we attempted to do it in various locations ranging from Dunkin Donuts to a Chinese dive in Shinjuku. Of course, we (well, I) managed to open the racier stuff at the most inopportune moments. I can never eat dinner in Shinjuku again.
Sunday included more shopping: Tsutaya; Kbooks, Animate, and Toranoana in Akihabara; and Toranoana, Mandarake, and Kbooks in Ikebukuro. (We'd meant to go to Animate there too, but ran out of time).
Animate was a bit of a disappointment - the new Ichi Raci was out, but alas, it includes no new chapter of Silver Diamond. I'd been looking forward to actually reading a chapter in real time with other fen, but it was not to be. There was nothing else to do, therefore, than buy some more Saiyuki crap that I don't really need, which I did. I also picked up a novel or two and the newest Sakurai Shushushu tankoubon, because I didn't feel like haunting my local Bookoff until someone bothered to sell a used copy. I considered getting the drama CD of Wild Rock as well, as that's something not readily available in my town, but didn't, due to the 3,000 yen price tag. Now I wish I had bought it, and will probably try to do so the next time I go to the local Animate.
The new Ikebukuro Mandarake is nice - well organised, brightly lit, and with an extensive collection of djs. It's quite obvious that they're trying to compete with Kbooks, and are doing a good job of it. I managed to pick up several more FMA and Deathnote dj, as well as the prize of my trip - a 400 yen FFVII doujinshi by none other than Sakurai Shushushu. (More on that in a later post.)
While in said Mandarake, we met (completely by chance) two of our companions from the Comiket outing earlier last month. I about had a heart attack when I looked up from a shelf of new doujinshi to find them standing directly behind me.
Mandarake also had some absolutely gorgeous looking djs by Bohra Naono, who I will one day wed if there is any cosmic justice in the universe. Unfortunately, the one I really wanted was 4,000 yen, so there was no way I could purchase it. Oh, how we weep.
And then it was on to Kbooks, where I purchased several more (and much pricier) dj by Sakurai and actually managed to get my hands on some decently priced (if still too expensive) Naono doujinshi. Not surprisingly, these were the most expensive, but highest quality, of my purchases that weekend.
Monday was consumed by a lot of tromping around in a semi-hung over state with loads of doujinshi on our backs. I didn't find any fandom stuff at Kinokunia, although I did manage to locate and purchase the sole remaining copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, which I've been wanting to read for quite some time, but which is the book most likely not to appear any time soon in my local bookstores. I also found an 一級 book I don't already own, so purchased that too. I'm going to pass this test, if only because I've sunk such a ridiculous sum of money into study materials that I'll feel like a complete tool if I don't.
Of course, I ended up standing on the shinkansen and tokkyuu all the way back home, but there's much to be said for the discreetness of the novel as compared to my other purchases, so I wasn't particularly bored on the way back.
So yeah. Weekend in Tokyo.

Mandarake and Kbooks are where you want to go for fen-produced yaoi, oftentimes from series where it doesn't exist in canon.

hmm okay thank you so much! ^__^ sometimes I think getting into yaoi and anime/manga in general was the beginning of the end for me (or at least my bank account); I'm almost perpetually broke nowadays!

And yes, yaoi is the beginning of the end as far as money is concerned. If you live overseas, you spend a lot of money to get the few you can't live without. If you live in Japan you spend a lot of money on every shiny thing within sight. So either way you cut it, you'd better have a cushy job or else;-)

I realize I'm a total stranger, but would it be possible for you to help me bid for/win a Yahoo!Japan auction for a Gackt concert ticket? (The seller doesn't ship overseas, and I stay in Singapore.)
