I have an unfailing ability to choose as favorites those characters who will die. Unfailing. And with that statement out of the way, spoilers on the latest chapter of Full Metal Alchemist.

My epic, I-adore-this-idea FMA WIP has just been jossed. In that oh-so-irretrievable of ways. For those of you braving the cut, this month's chapter in a rundown:

Ed & posse show up in Central to find that they've lost track of Rin, who's busy elsewhere being arrested for illegal immigration. Ed & posse do run into Hawkeye and Mustang, both of whom remember Winry from their earlier meeting, and Roy has a ridiculously cute scene where he hits on Winry like it's nobody's business. He immediately unredeems himself in the biggest act of pussydom ever when he lies to Ed about Hughes' death.

Meanwhile, Ross is being interrogated back at the ranch by Armstrong and Fallguy (if that's the correct romanization of the dude's name, I'll love Arakawa forever). Turns out Hughes was shot by a single bullet from her gun - the bullet she happened to put into our ensouled serial killer in chapters previous.

It so happens our serial killer sees the morning paper (courtesy of Officer Havok - another great name choice there), and springs Ross from jail, and what the heck? takes Rin along for the ride as well. The three run into Ed & posse, who also having seen the day's paper are going to find Ross And Get To The Bottom Of This.

Barry stops them while allowing Ross to run for it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (again) a call comes into Mustang's office: Ross is on the lam, and all soldiers are authorised to shoot her on sight. Roy grabs his gloves, tells Hawkeye to hold down the fort, and splits into town to find Ross And Get To The Bottom Of This.

Ed manages to break by Barry and comes across Roy, who's just incinerated Ross.

Goodbye, my secret and guilty pleasure OTP for FMA. Who knows, I may finish the fic anyway, just because I love this pairing more than I think I should. Dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit.

SPECULATION: I don't think Roy really killed Ross. He'd have had to have located her pretty damn quickly. Also, he didn't have his coat w/ him in the office, and he sure is wearing it in the death scene. My money's on one of the Seven Deadly's human impersonator as being the real killer. But, wail.

OMG HE KILLED ROSS!

DIE ARAKAWA DIE!

:o

Dear lord, talk about a plot twist.

Ach, poor Ross.

(Thanks for the spoilers! ^_^;;)

Not at all. The new monthlies are out, so it's my duty to spread the love.

And I know! Poor Ross. She was such a sweet, cool character. Plus, she bitchsmacked Ed. That was cool.

Actually, now that I've had time to cool down and think about it, I am ABSOLUTELY SURE that Roy is not the real killer. If we think back through the mists of time to last month's FMA, after being appraised of Roy's investigation into Hughes' death in one the final scenes, Lust says something along the lines of, "I wonder if he can be counted on not to meddle. After all, he's one of our most important human sacrifices," or something very much along those lines.

So I'm certain Envy's been sent in to impersonate Roy & kill Ross, killing two birds with one stone. And if I'm wrong, I'll do something yet to be determined, but suitably odious.

Holy crap, I wasn't aware that she had said this. :O ::fears for Roy::

As much as I'm sad to see Ross get killed off, this does set things up nicely for some Ed - Roy tension/fighting/snarking (even if it's Envy-in-disguise, he still looks like Roy ^_^;;). I'm a little shocked that Roy lied to Ed about Hughes death though. I'm not sure keeping him in the dark is the best way of protecting him, Taisa, assuming that's what you're doing.

Great story. Great spoilers. Thanks again. :D

That it does indeed, but I have to wonder what Roy's up to, because he isn't dumb, and unless Arakawa's just become lazy, Roy would have to realise that there's no way Ed could be in Central and not hear about Hughes' death - it's still making the front page! So either he's manipulating Ed or he's just eaten something that's lowered his IQ considerably.

Agreed. He may have something up his sleeve. At the moment, it's really hard to say. I'll have to give the thing a reread tonight.

where he hits on Winry like it's nobody's business

Does this mean we have canon proof that Roy doesn't mind a huge age difference in relationships? (...Ed, my boy, you're in luck.)

he lies to Ed about Hughes' death

He WHAT? That'll make it even harder for him to gain Ed's trust back after that Ross incident. Also, I agree with your speculation -- I doubt it was Roy who killed Ross. I have to give it to the sins, they really know how to screw up with Ed's head, not to mention the Colonel's plans.

And I feel for your loss; I know how it is when your favorite character dies. (*mock whisper* That's what AUs are for.)

Oh and btw, what Lust says about someone possibly meddling in the future? I thought she was pertaining to Ed.

I like the way you think! Oh, I really like the way you think. Besides, we all know the Taisa is shameless when it comes to romantic encounters anyway...

That'll make it even harder for him to gain Ed's trust back after that Ross incident

I know. I wonder what Roy was thinking - surely Ed would find out about Hughes' death if he was in Central for any length of time. It's gonna bring some great angst though, if it doesn't end w/ one of them killing the other. Which would be a great way for the Sevens to solve their Roy problem - the Taisa beat Ed three years ago, but could he do it again now?

(*mock whisper* That's what AUs are for.)

Or animeverse, which has diverged enough from the manga to nearly become an AU in its own right.

Oh and btw, what Lust says about someone possibly meddling in the future? I thought she was pertaining to Ed.

Well, looking back at the manga, her final line is ambiguous, but the bit before definitely refers to Roy getting too close to the truth behind Hughes' death. "I thought moving him to Central where we could keep an eye on him would be sufficient, but it looks like that failed. / It'll cause problems if we let them meet up. / So it'd be nice if he does us all a favor and stops prying. / As he's an important candidate for our human sacrifice."

The question here is, does the candidate bit refer to Roy or Ed? It's an intentionally ambiguous sentence, since Lust isn't using subjects. Seeing as they've referred to Ed as a human sacrifice previously, the candidate bit makes me think that Roy's in the running as well, in some capacity.

I came here from Lux's LJ. Thanks for the spoilers!

0_o Arakawa is a lot more kill-happy with the characters than most shounen mangka. But I suppose my perspective is skewed from reading happy WJ titles.

Not at all. I like spoiling people.

Arakawa is a lot more kill-happy with the characters than most shounen mangka.

I know, and I adore him for it as much as I hate it, because honestly? An author who's willing to kill beloved characters regularly, remorselessly, and without sentimentality or buildup, is an author who creates great dramatic tension in his story.

From: [identity profile] worldserpent.livejournal.com

Yes, because a lot of the time it keeps you actually caring. Now I'm worried about the ultimate survival of the rest of the military characters. ;_; You're only safe if you're an alchemist, it seems.

(And yeah, the lack of build up is interesting. We just didn't *see* this or the other one coming, and I think that was intentional. It's probably a mark of realism: the world is a dangerous place, and it's not like death really marks people. They're in the wrong place at the wrong time.)

I'm in mourning. They licensed FMA for Cartoon Network in the states. I DON'T HAVE CABLE.

You think that is pain? Try living here, where Saiyuki is preempted for information on wave height in the Japan sea. Then tell me about pain.
