A few weeks ago, perseid posted a request to her flist to rec her good fics. But not just any good fics, good fics that start off good, with a killer opening line. Now, what I really want to be doing right now is writing, but that's not happening, so I might as well read something. And because I've given up on finding good fanfic through chance alone, I'm depending on you, gentle readers, to help me out.

So rec me some good fics with great opening lines. C'mon. I dare you.

...dammit, I have all these fics I adore, but killer openings are rarer than I thought.

silvaren's The End of All Things Short, stark and simple.

Once upon a time there was a monk who sought enlightenment through travel.

At first, when he looked at mountains, he saw mountains. When he looked at rivers, he saw rivers.

After ten years of traveling, he was wiser. He looked at mountains, and saw more than mountains. He looked at rivers, and saw more than rivers.

After twenty years of traveling, his understanding had grown still further. When he looked at mountains, he saw mountains once more. And when he looked at rivers, they were rivers again.

Thus did he achieve enlightenment.

absenceofmind's Mountains Once More. The fic itself is general WAFF, but this opening just grabbed me - matter-of-fact but ironic, casual but foreign. If that makes sense.

damn, trawling back, I can only come up with a couple. o__O I need to go hunting again.
