In Which The Pieces Draw Together

I am a hardcore follow-my-nose writer. All of my fics start with a single scene or snippet of dialogue, and then spiral out from there, very slowly and often with a great deal of painful concentration before any sort of plot emerges. Some writers are able to conceive of and execute fanfic in one fell swoop, writing straight from beginning to end, and with a clear idea of where the story is going at all times. Not me.

I literally think of writing in terms of 'banging,' as if my fic is a huge chunk of rock. My scene or dialogue snippet is at the core of the rock. There's also a sculpture of some sort inherent in the rock, and it's my job to swing my hammer at it, knocking off huge unnecessary chunks until that inherent form becomes apparent to me, with my arms aching all the while from the jarring blows of the hammer.

This is why I like my Kurt Vonnegut quote so well; he almost exactly describes my own experience of writing.

As more and more chunks fall away, I switch to smaller hammers and chisels, because the thing is, once a piece is knocked off, it can't be reattatched, even if I was mistaken and it should never have been removed in the first place. I also approach the rock from all different angles, because even once I know what its final form should be, there are some places that have to be carved away before I can get to others, and I can't get to the latter first, even if I'm unsure of the former. This is what luthien67 refers to as Random Access Writing, as I've mentioned previously.

Tonight, my HPSS fic really started drawing together. I've known what the final sculpture is going to look like for quite some time, but at this point I'm finally aware of what the original rock looks like as well. It's a lot smaller than I'd originally believed, so hopefully, I'll be able to finish the fic sooner rather than later.
