Someone recently sent an email to the Snapeslash list asking if there were any good HP/SS relationship fics where Snape is the pursuer. I responded with a theory that these stories are in short supply because given what we've seen of canon Snape, he's much more likely to combine his position as a teacher and sex to hurt or punish than to pursue a relationship.
Another list member wrote (although not in response to my post):
We Snarry shippers all believe they could be a good match... that's what all these stories we love so dearly are about.
That's interesting, because to me, HP/SS are not a good match. At all. If I'm writing a HP pairing fic (as opposed to genfic), I'm most likely writing HP/SS. But that's the point of the story for me - taking two characters who absolutely despise one another in canon and then prodding them into situations where they gradually lose their animosity toward one another.
I think it can be done, and if the author is lucky and talented, it can be done in an extremely believable fashion. But it's still another thing entirely from believing that Potter and Snape were meant for each other.
Because, you know, they aren't.
