I've been a little worried about whether or not I'll get my HP/SS FQF stories finished on time.
It appears that the listmom's cat is ill, and that she's calling the fests off. Of course it goes without saying that I feel horrible for the listmum. Having a sick/dying pet is agonising.
On the other hand, I now have the freedom to take as much time writing these fics as I can see they're going to need, even if the precipitating circumstances are rotten. This is a blessing in disguise, because while I'd thought these fics were going to be nice little one shots, the more I started developing them, the more they began to spiral into something larger. If I don't want the resolutions to seem rushed or implausible, I'll need lots of wiggle time to write the stories the way the should be written and then tweak them to my satisfaction.
Still, there is something exciting about participating in Fests. I think it's the community. I like getting challenges from other authors and then spinning them into stories neither I nor the challenger expected to be written. I also like seeing how an author takes one of my challenges (for which I usually have a story already plotted out, regardless of the fact that I won't be writing it), and takes it in directions I'd never anticipated. And it's just neat to have your fic on a centralised site with the fics of all the other participants, and to know that everyone wrote these stories under the same circumstances, with the same deadlines in mind.
