Say what you like about her latter books (on which I too have Opinions), or her 90s persecution of fanficcers, that Interview With the Vampire--an entire book about clinical depression and not-straight-ness--merely existed, was HUGE to me when I was a kid.

I could spend the week making a list of things we wouldn't have as culture - authors, franchises, concepts, etc. - if it wasn't for her... ...and still not manage to list it all.

I remember reading an excerpt of Interview in a pulp mag as a kid and being utterly mindblown.

Yes, exactly this. She was such a major influence at the cultural level, and on an individual level, IwtV was absolutely one of those formative books that shaped my ideas and preferences for what theme, narrative, plot, ambiance, and all the rest should do.

I've always really loved her writing style and, of course, Interview with the Vampire. It's very sad news.

Yes, agreed. IwtV was such a huge influence on me--how I write and what I look to get out of books.
