Challenge #12

The 13 memes in the challenge post are a great deal of fun, but my favorite meme from back in the day is actually the first line fic meme, in which I take the opening sentences from some of my fics and anyone who wants to play along at home picks their favorite and uses it to write a drabble or ficlet in the comments.
I like this one because it leaves room for silliness, but also seriousness and everything in between. As an added bonus, it dovetails nicely with Challenge #11 too. So without further ado, the first lines:
She knows he is a kind man, even though his statements are often perplexing.
The captain is in a fine state when he returns to his quarters that night.
To rule was...not what he had anticipated.
I retired to the study after dinner, claiming a need to see to my correspondence.
This is what he should have done: waited until the evening downpour began and slipped into his tent.
The cell was small, and dark, and located at the end of a long corridor.
Jacksonville was a lawless place.
Consciousness returns slowly, the narcotic fog of the potion still wreaking havoc upon my senses.

It’s now or never, he thinks, and stills, staring at his hands as they lie open atop his knees.
