Not being a particularly fast writer, it's going to take me awhile to produce something for Challenge #11. So let's do some of the backlog in the meantime.

Challenge #8

In your own space, create a wishlist. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some of these are probably pretty niche requests, but it never hurts to ask, right?

• Would anyone be interested in a sync read of one or more of the three volumes in M.J. Carter’s Blake and Avery series? I love these books so much, and absent another installment coming out any time soon a sync read would be delightful.


• Similarly, if any fans of Akizuki Koh’s fabulous period novels (Ouchou Romanse and Yukimura-dono En nite Sourou) or Naono Bohra's period stories (or even just of Naono in general) happen to be reading this, please come squee with me about them!


• I'd love pointers to any sites or comms sharing raw scans of manga or manhwa, if anyone knows of any.


• It's a long shot, but does anyone know of an archive with fics from the Third Wave of the Snape Fuh-Q fest? I only have one of the stories I wrote for it. Luckily, it's the best of the bunch, but I'd still like to recover the others if they exist somewhere.


• Rec new fandoms to me! If there's a novel, movie, series, game, manga, whathaveyou you think everyone should be into, come tell me about it.

This might not be your thing at all, but the one thing I rec everyone is Los Espookys, the Spanish-language HBO comedy series about a group of (extremely queer) goth friends who love horror and start a business to stage horror things for people. It is so, so weird and I love it so, so much. A friend describes it as "kind of like Derry Girls, if Derry Girls was set in an unspecified Latin American country, only had queer main characters, and was super goth. And weirder." I want more people to watch it because right now it feels like the only people who are are myself and one other friend!

Oh my goodness, that sounds Wholly Relevant To My Interests. The kicker is that I don't have HBO (which is why I have yet to cross Chernobyl and several documentaries off my TBV list). I will have to see if it's out on DVD or available through the library here--this is something I very much want to watch!

It's so so good! I...definitely did not watch it legally, but if there's an opportunity to pay to watch it at some point, I will take it because I love it so much!

What is a sync read?

The third wave was the first Western fandom I'd participated in since XF. I wrote my stories in the US, got on a plane, and posted them from an international center in Japan, so it has a special place in my heart. :D

A sync read is when a bunch of people (in this case, it'd be on DW) get together to read the same book on a schedule and then discuss and squee. Interested?

Ahhh, thank you! I thought it might have something to do with podfic'ing, lol! Basically a very structured book club. I'm not sure how well I'd do with a schedule for reading or having to read a particular book, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Excellent! The tentative plan is to read Strangler Vine throughout February. But really, the point is to discuss/squee about the books with others, so feel free to skip the read entirely and just pop into the discussion posts as you like.

As a very spur-of-the-moment reader, I sympathize with not enjoying scheduled reads when the mood hasn't taken me.

I've actually read that one, but it was lovely descriptively, so a re-read would be nice.

Where are you hosting this?

Right now the idea is that I'll do a schedule post at the start of February and then a post going into each weekend so people can discuss that week's chapters in the comments. (Obviously, this is all subject to possible tweaking as we figure out what works best for everyone, but that's the plan to start.)

I'd love to do a Blake & Avery sync read! I enjoy those books a lot too (as you've probably guessed XD) And it would be great to discuss them with somebody!

Oh man, I am so down. Would you want to go from Strangler Vine all the way through Devil's Feast, or pick one in particular, or...? Once we figure that out, maybe we can set out a reading schedule--maybe first or second week of February for a reading start date?

Cool, so how about this: let's start with Strangler Vine and aim for four chapters a week, so we'll wrap the book up at the end of February. I'll make a discussion post heading into the weekend and then anyone who's inclined can jump in at will. ★
