This year I'm participating in two (new to me) communities: getyourwordsout and inkingitout.

I tend to write best with a deadline looming over my head, so as far as challenges go, yuletide is the one I make sure to participate in every year. chocolateboxcomm in February, nightonficmountain in June, and trickortreatex in October are useful motivators for writing periodically throughout the year. fandom5k helps me write beyond my 1500-2000 word comfort level, and worldbuildingex is a lovely challenge that does what it says on the label. Finally, raremaleslashex is a great exchange for my first fanfic genre that produces consistently good fics for less well-known pairings.

That's a quite a great yearly calendar of incentives!

That worldbuilding one looks so cool. If I were back to writing, I would totally give it a go.

It's a lot of fun--I like that it centers on an aspect of fanficcing that often comes along for the ride on exchanges, but isn't the first focus. Maybe check out the request letters once sign ups close? That's helped motivate me to write in the past, without requiring the hard-and-fast commitment of signing up.
