The Make-Up
When I first started listening to The Make-Up it was inconceivable to me that I would ever see them live, let alone three times. But I did think to myself, here is a lead singer who strolls out over the audience’s heads while he’s performing. And lo, that is exactly what came to pass for the majority of this show, which exceeded the already high bar set by the other two I’ve seen. (I spent well over ten minutes holding the guy up after he made his way to the far end of the venue.
They played for just about an hour—which, given that most of their tracks rarely breach the 2.5 minute mark, still amounts to around 25 songs. And those songs included most of my favorites, covering most of the tracks on Save Yourself and Destination: Love; Live! At Cold Rice, which are two solidly amazing albums: Here Comes The Judge (a natural born opening number that they played as one), Save Yourself, White Belts, The Bells, I Am Pentagon, They Live By Night, Evidence Is Everywhere, We Can’t Be Contained, International Airport (a major favorite of mine and one that immediately caught the GC’s attention), I Want Some, Every Baby Cries The Same, Blue Is Beautiful, We’re Having A Baby, Wade In the Water. But best of all...best of all is that they played Walking On The Dune, which is my favorite, favorite, eternal favorite song by them, and one I’d never heard them play before or ever thought I would. So, so cool.
Russian Circles
No one does foreboding like Russian Circles. They are as no-frills about their shows as they are serious about capturing that mood. They took the stage—guitarist to the left, bassist to the right, and drummer on risers at the back—and played. And oh, it was good, one of those shows you emerge from tired and elated with no clear memory of time having passed. Plus, I got to hear Harper Lewis live, which was incredible.
Shows we did not manage to see: Oh Land, Sleater-Kinney (all right because they were playing the shittiest venue in the area), Väsen.
