Yesterday, D&D Group 1 finished Curse of Strahd. We had been playing for 2.5 years.

TWO AND A HALF YEARS. By the end, we had all made it to level 10. We had completed all but two of the side quests. We had so many abilities, spells, scrolls, and other magic items we had to have charts and tables to keep track of all the modifiers that were in effect.

I beat the shit out of Strahd’s coffin with my bare monk hands. In a single turn. With an attack left to spare.

One of the other players, a Tiefling rogue, basically one-shotted Strahd. And then we all sat around the table going, “Huh.” Because by that point, we’d being playing so long we basically couldn’t wrap our heads around the fact that we weren't going to be playing any more.

It was so hard to wrap our heads around that fact that all had all packed up and were mostly out the door before someone realised we hadn’t read the epilogue. Which, I know Curse of Strahd is horror-themed, but I Take Issue with the idea that Strahd comes back to menace Barovia six months after the player’s victory. Six months. Yes, gothic/horror-themed game. Yes, that they were setting up for a sequel back in the day. But still. Way to invalidate all our grinding, TSR.

To fill the void, we already set to jump directly into Dragon Heist, which the GC will be DMing. I am toying with the idea of playing a bard, which will be something of a departure for me because I try to play a different character class in each game or module, and I’m currently a bard in my Monday sessions. But those are run on a milestone vice XP leveling scheme and we hit a milestone every three sessions, with the result has been that I haven’t really felt like I’ve fully mastered all of the skills and abilities that come with each level before we hit the next one.

GC: Have you thought about your backstory yet?
Moi: A little? What's the set-up that brings the party together at the start? That will help me figure something out.
GC: There's not much, really. You're in the city, and there's been an uptick in gang activity recently. No one knows much about it...one of the gangs may be headed by someone called Xanathar, but no one's sure if Xanathar is human, or even real.
Moi: Judging by the cover of his Guide, I'm gonna go with "no" and "yes" on that.
GC: ... That's cheating.
