...and I begin to keenly feel the lack of a planner with dates for next year. I have plenty of records of things, but I like having them all in one place, written down by hand. And so I count down to the last week of January, when planners go on super sale.
Recentish things.
Due to scheduling issues, this year's GeekBBQ Friendsgiving and Whisky White Elephant were rolled into one event. The food was great (and there was So. Much. Of it.) and the GC and I walked in with a local bourbon that made its recipient very happy and out with a limited edition Ardbeg: both wins in my book.
We undertook a massive deep clean and grocery-shopping marathon ahead of the 21st, which were a bear to do but excellent once done as we could head into the holiday season without any fuss, versus rushing out at the last minute to stores on unpredictable holiday schedules because we needed an orange or some carrots.
I sit far to the right on the baking <---> cooking spectrum, but late December heralds the arrival of my annual baking flex. This year involved: marzipan shortbread, Earl Grey shortbread, walnut snowballs, pecan snowballs, almond macaroons, peppermint macaroons, ginger biscotti, sesame-gram cookies, pineapple drop cookies, and kronas kaka. TL;DR - I used more butter in two days than the GC and I consumed in the preceding 360-odd days.
Giftsmas Eve found us (post-turkey) back at GeekBBQ and from there to the tavern down the street. Giftsmas day saw us prepping dinner and then making egg nog from F.M. MacNeill's 1950s-era The Scots Cellar, which informs readers that it's called "Old Man's Milk" and is "a traditional breakfast drink". (This explains some things about my ancestors). Gifts were exchanged; the GC, ma soeur et al. and mes parentes were all pleased, so another win there.
On the 26th we ventured to Outer Suburbia to meet up with a fellow GeekBBQer whose local brewery was releasing a seasonal stout. This excursion accrued several last minute additions, which required some rerouting and staggered pick-ups, but worked out surprisingly well in the end. The stout was good, the board games were good, and the company was excellent. As a bonus, the holiday lack of traffic meant we arrived in Outer Suburbia early enough to spend a solid 90 minutes in the area's used book barn, where the GC and I both made several very good finds.
