Please marry me. Only one write-up this time because there's so much to cover. And with that, let's progress to:

Episode 2.16, or Twenty-two Short Stories Of Springfield.

This episode was Christmas. You may imagine the many happy moments I spent thumbing through my kanji dictionaries now that I have actual characters for everyone...even Lu-ten! I wish I was able to use Chinese-language character dictionaries, because there are some pretty divergent meanings present in the kanjis’ Japanese usage (i.e. Zuko is either "resurrected actions" or "resurrected fault/blame"), as well as some names which just seem nonsensical (like the character for "to cut" in Katara’s name), and I'd like to know if this is due to lexical shifts, or if these meanings hold in the characters’ Chinese usages as well.

Anyway.

Katara & Toph: a sweet episode about Our Gang's morning routine. Aang shaves! Sokka shaves! And there I am--I mean, Toph is, still in bed and seeing no reason to get up. Katara thus decides a trip to the spa is in order, but I'm not--I mean, Toph is not what you'd call the girly type. So much <3 for her character here. This seg was a nice little riff on the "don't worry, you are beautiful and beauty does matter" togetherness chick flick trope, with Katara pointing out that the important things about Toph are her self-confidence and ability, making Toph's insecurity about her appearance just that—an insecurity that really doesn't matter all that much in the grand scheme of things.

Iroh: Iroh goes shopping, dispenses horticultural advice, isn't afraid to show his feminine side, chills with today's youth, kicks some ass, gives Life Advice to a Lost Soul, and says, "You won't be needing this Bart Trismegistus!" and rips my heart out of my chest.

Aang: the filler segment. Aang once again demonstrates his "way" with animals. But it's still durned cute.

Sokka: someone get this guy a record deal. Or at least a gig in a Fresh Prince cover group.

Zuko: Oh dear, [livejournal.com profile] bloody_american, I never imagined that Iroh's "assistance" would manifest itself quite like that. This segment can be summarised thusly: Zuko gets tricked out like

DRACO

and goes on a date, which doesn't turn out that badly, but still calls it quits because "It's complicated," by which he means that dating Hakkai's flame

KANAN

didn't work out all that great for the last guy who tried it.

Momo: Continuing the Saiyuki theme, The Gang's white, flying dragon

lemur Hakuryu Momo goes off on an adventure of his own and is adopted by a pack of small children wildcats for a night of crazy hijinx before ending on a wishing Appa was having a homecoming note.

The end.

Permission to quote

Hi Trismegistus,

Sorry for randomly showing up in your lj, but I can't seem to find an email addy for you. :)

I'm writing my doctoral dissertation, which I plan to turn into a book, on Potter fanfiction. You made a comment in Fandom Wank that I thought was a great reading of the portrayal of Slytherins in the HP books, here:

http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/331889.html?thread=19593073#t19593073

May I have your permission to quote you in my dissertation/book?
You'd be cited as "Trismegistus. Comment on Fandom Wank.
www.journalfen.net. March 7, 2004." If you like, I can give you
a different pseudonym. The Fandom Wank mods have given me
permission to cite FW in this manner. If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to email me at cmikhailovic [at] yahoo [dot] com. (I'd obviously rather not reveal my real name or my university here, but I'll be happy to tell you via email.) Please let me know what you
think, and thanks for your time!

Best,
Catja
