...marching as to the halfway point in Season Two.

Episode 2.11
Poor Aang was just heartbreaking in this ep. Very much appreciated his real, human reaction to Appa's loss instead of the "enlightened" one the writers could have gone with. Katara deserves a medal for putting up with Sokka after he decides to get back to his quasi-Native American roots by diggin' on Old Man Peyote. (Once again, had no idea you could do that in a kids' show...) Iroh gets back to his Gandalf/Merlin/Wise Old Man roots by checking in with the Avatarverse's Bonsai Rite Masonic Temple, simultaneously teaching Zuko to kick back and smell the roses.

On a serious note, one thing that's really got me about this season as a whole is how much younger Zuko seems. I have a hard time reconciling him with the arrogant scrapper that braved IEDs and blizzards in season one. Not sure if it's to do with the new haircut, overall lack of firebending, or a combination thereof.

But by FAR the best thing about this episode aside from the 24/7 awesomeness that is Toph was the ending scene. Because Katara and Aang? So, so, SO meant to be together, and you know it.

Episode 2.12
Pretty good bridge episode here. First thing I wondered was if the pregnant lady and her husband were the couple Zuko ultimately decided not to rob a few episodes back--thought they might be a way to let Our Heroes in on the fact that the quasi-villains were in the vicinity, but looks like that was a false alarm. (In other words, this show now has me looking for connections where there aren't any.)

Of course, I absolutely did not see Zuko and Jet going TOTALLY GAY FOR EACH OTHER. Boy is that one going to go down in flames in a few eps; mark my words. Anyway, awesome move on Toph's part to get the gang on board the ship, and awesome move on the part of Our Heroes to help the family through when they can't proceed. I really hope the original gamble doesn't blow up in Toph's face, what with those bounty hunters on her trail.

And once again, major kudos to Avatar for letting Suki (and isn't that name delightfully prophetic) be the capable one and making Sokka look like an overprotective doof. (But not a disgustingly chauvanistic bastard.) So much love.

Of course night turns to day with the same inevitability that ideas get recycled, as Aang & Co. are forced to battle what amounts to the unagi from ep whatever of season one. Thank god Toph is there to kiss Mack Daddy Sokka---I mean, oh dear...and make it all worthwhile for the viewers. They get to the other side where child genius Ed Elric Aang marvels at the miracle of birth, which can wow even him, with his massive abilities. Another big kudos here to the writers who, like Hosokawa in FMA, portray birth as something really neat, as opposed to what screaming women suffer through in cars when the script calls for dramatic tension. And that takes us to the final scene where, eveling in his newfound hope, Aang elects to glide to Ba Sing Se, and we learn that Fire Lord Ozai must be feeling somewhat...inadequate these days, if you catch me.
