Episode 2.03
Aaand we come to our basic expositionary episode for season two. Zuko's sister is one crazy witch-queen. I'm digging the whole Qing Emperor bit she's got going on, including those two old lady advisors. The animation job on the circus girl is neat, and I really like the other chick (Mai?) in their little clique—she reminds me of someone from another series, although I can’t place my finger on just who at the moment. Interesting little remark she made about Zuko; was there some kind of romance or flirtation going on between those two, perhaps? Or is she just one more of the legion Fire Nation people who enjoys making his life hell? Nice to see Bumi again, and as kooky as ever. I'd totally forgotten that The Gang had already been to Omashu; in any case, the Fire Nation are some fast builders. Also, the Shaun of the Dead pseudo-zombi bit was fun. At any rate, not much else to say about this ep, which probably means that it's going to come back into play somewhere farther down the line.

Episode 2.04
No fair with the Zuko tease before...nothing. At least he's still extremely bitter about his reduced circumstances. It would have struck me as way out of character if he'd come to emphasize with the common people so soon. And poor Uncle Iroh, suffering through all of that so cheerfully. Nothing funnier than a fat homeless man dancing for money. If you're a fratboy or a loser, that is.

The swamp was delightfully atmospheric, as was Old Man Willow. And again, poor Sokka. He's really not cut out to inhabit any sort of world where magic exists. I mean, he would be totally right about the improbability of it all were he in any other universe other than the Avatarverse. I once again find myself wishing the show would cut him some slack. The inbred river people were both annoying and funny, especially that "You kids ain't from around here, are ya?" campfire scene toward the end. But the highlight of the show was of course Appa and Momo. Especially Momo. I want a Momo doll. Or just a Momo, really.

And finally, yay! for the final scene. Although, how has Zuko managed to cart around that mask all this time without anyone noticing?
