1.19 & 1.20

I have no idea what to say about these episodes, except that they were really, really good. So good I didn’t really mind the massive plot holes, like why on earth the Water Tribe didn’t attack during the night before the full moon, after the Fire Nation armada withdrew. I suppose they could have been regrouping, but if they were strong enough to attack by boat during the day, why didn’t they just head out at night when there were even stronger and finish everyone off? Unless they sensed that Aang and Zuko wouldn’t get any cool scenes that way.

Zuko and Katara’s fight was the crowning scene of 1.19: I think we can infer some of Ozai’s treatment of his son from Zuko’s “little girl” and “peasant” taunts, which really struck me as harsh, even for him. I liked the yin yang of the koi as well—so much Asian spirituality/philosophy flying under the radar here. The spirit world this time was nicely reminiscent of the same from the second Onmyoji movie; I almost expected Abe no Seimei to pop out of somewhere and help Aang along, although Roku did just fine in that regard.

Shelob Koh was pretty darn creepy. Again, I would have been terrified if I’d seen this episode as a kid. Aang just stole my heart here—he’s so brave for such a small kid. The show totally faked me out here: when Koh mentioned the Moon and Ocean were complementary opposites I immediately flashed on Sokka and Katara. Then he mentions good and evil and I think “Katara and Zuko. Crap that’s gonna be a tough one.” Then I caught on to the koi, with about three seconds to spare. One other thing that struck me: was Zuko’s Blue Spirit mask one of Koh’s faces or am I just reading too much into this?

Nice little backstory bit for poor ole Zuko. So that nasty looking smiling chick in the audience when Dad fried him was his sister. Older or younger, I wonder. Jeez, I’m just waiting for the sordid details regarding Mom. Is there anyone outside of Iroh who likes this guy? Aside from Aang, who’s still reluctantly saving Zuko’s ass because he knows he’ll need him before the series is over.

Ooh, Zhou is delightfully evil. And Iroh kicks ass. I love him more and more every second. This was one of the coolest scenes in the history of television And finally, poor, poor Sokka. What a sweet guy. Avatar is one of the few television shows that does kiss scenes which don’t make me roll my eyes. Just good, good, good stuff.
