Let's hear it for Avatar 1.03

In which our heroes travel to the Airbender Temple where Harry Ang schools Ron Sokka during a game of Quidditch Airball, Koryu Ang gets bored watching Komyo Sanzo Monk Tiatso smoke his pipe bake cakes, and Evil Dude Kanda Zoka calls at Fire Nation port to repair his ship, crying out, "What's my motivation!"--the answer to which question some Even Eviler Dudes are more than happy to enlighten us. Meanwhile, back at the ranch Goku Ang goes apeshit because something dreadful has happened to Konzen Tiatso. Can our heroes Hakkai and Gojyo Katara and Sokka talk him down before he does something Dire?

In other reactions, I finally figured out who Zoka reminds me of--Kanda from D.Gray-man. Also, the menfolk get shirtless and are drawn buff and with nipples. Nipples. Hosannah! Ye gods, is this really a kids' show? And finally, duels among members of the Fire Nation are referred to as "agni会." See, Mom and Dad, my Japanese and Classics majors really are applicable somewhere outside the classroom!

Ep 1.04
Okay, not as good as the proceeding three, but still really, really good. I mean, can you think of any other show where a male lead gets taken by a bunch of uppity warrior females and doesn't roundly teach them their place within the next 20 minutes? Cause, that's the first time I've ever seen that happen in kids' TV. Also, a main character gloating over how cool he is without roundly disgusting me? I never thought I'd live to see that one either. Ang reminds me of a cross between Luffy and, like, every five-year-old Japanese boy on the face of the planet. Kudos once again to this show.

Seriously, I'm only up to ep 4 and I am already having too much fun.

What I love about Sokka is that he's a *good guy.* Any other show and he'd be a flat comic relief, crass and pathetic, but what I love about Ep 4 is that he's humble. He apologizes, and he truly means it. WHAT OTHER GUY WOULD AGREE TO WEAR A DRESS TO LEARN FROM A GIRL. Issues are handled so intelligently and open-mindedly on this show; I mean really, actually explicitly *showing* that Aang used to be a woman in a previous life? On an American KIDS show? That little girl's comment to Aang: "Wooow, you were pretty," and Aang's sort of pleased and embarrassed? Makes my heart warm. Heee.

And I choose to take Aang's comment to Sokka, "Hey, nice dress!" literally--that it *is* a nice dress, and not a derogatory jab at Sokka's masculinity. (Which, actually, I think is the correct interpretation considering what comes up in a later ep....)

Oh, and you can definitely poke at me to sign onto AIM whenever; I just haven't lately, but I am an internet whore.... ;) (cinderfallen at gmail.) LJ comms for dl'ing don't work for you?

Not even that--a show postulating reincarnation? Why, that's one step away from godless paganism, that is! And then there's that whole anti-conquest, anti-colonialization message, which would be by no means applicable (let alone subversive) given current events today, oh no... And again, everything you mentioned about a kids' show that teaches people to be decent to each other without any moralizing or characters who are mean and nasty for its own sake.

The problem with comms, btw, is that they always spoil me, no matter how hard I try not to be, so I try not to participate if I'm not caught up on a given series.

Re: getting spoiled. If you got my comment, that comm has a seperate post for just links (in its profile). No comments other than links allowed.

And yeap yeap yeap. This show makes me seriously happy. I only got into it a couple months ago, but I mainlined it like crack and now I actually have to WAIT for new eps.

I am *never* going to get over how, like you said, the characters are *decent* people. Really, it's like they examined my brain for how all fictional characters should act and plastered it onto national television. And the reincarnation is hot, too.

And now I am following hard at your heels down the road to perdition, she wails.

Yup. Two straight hours of Avatar today. And I only stopped there because my cruddy old laptop overheated and crashed. I totally foresaw that bit with Zuko coming, but it still made me happy 'cause now I know he's a decent guy too.

Yes, the reincarnation is hot. As is all the Buddhist iconography that I would have totally missed if I didn't know anything about Buddhism. Which is really cool, if you think about it. I wonder who the writers are.

I saw the creators in a commercial clip, and they're super young, and seem pretty normal and goofy. I don't know why it surprised me that these young guys could come with such sophisticated and mature scripts.

What is hilarious is that they hired a martial artist to show the animators how to portray the real martial-arts insipired bending moves, and he decided to teach the entire team the moves, to get them to "feel" it.

Oh, and have you seen these, on YouTube?
Airbending: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WQzArgAH_Mo&mode=related&search=

There's one on each of the four elements, the consultant talking about the individual martial art that inspired each of the bending techniques. (You can find the rest of the links on the little sidebar on the actual page.)

Yay Avatar! It's a show with a lot of known variables, yup, but they're put together so well. It's just quality.

I know! I'm really tickled by this show. So why didn't I hear about it earlier?

Dunno, maybe you weren't paying attention!

XD I've posted (http://sub-divided.livejournal.com/tag/series:avatar) about it a few times. (Also, OMG, if you have gotten to the second season you MUST read this post (http://lacewood.livejournal.com/108042.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cynic_in_charge. HILARITY.)

No kidding? Before I jump in (because I'd love to hear what you have to say about it) how much will your posts spoil me? Cause I don't want to ruin anything for myself before I get to it in the show.

Nothing's spoiled from the tag view. The first post (from the bottom) is a series overview I wrote after seeing the first three episodes, the second is fanfiction I wrote after same, the third recaps episodes 9 through 13 with icons, and the newest one is icon bases from the 19th and 20th episodes of the first season. I haven't seen the second season yet.
