...but you guys didn't really think I'd go without making some sort of post on Comiket, did you? I wanted to do my subject justice, hence the delay. Most of these pictures were taken at a weird angle because I am lazy. Graphic-heavy like woah, but surprisingly worksafe. And without further ado, Comiket porn porn.

I was a little disappointed, because two of my favorite fandoms - Saiyuki and Fullmetal Alchemist - were on Friday this year, and I couldn't get the time off to go. It's especially sad considering that last year Saiyuki had about two aisles of participating circles; this year they had an entire section. Still, a good number of my fandoms - Death Note, D.Gray-man, Bleach, Harry Potter and LotR were all on Saturday.

We headed to Tokyo Big Sight (Or rather, Tokyo Bikkuri Sight, if you're the insanely clever Sakurai Shu3) bright and early and got in after a relatively short time spent queuing. Once inside, I beelined for the east hall and Houseki-Hime/Idea's table, where I picked up this book:

which is a D.Gray-man fanfic. Good stuff.

I then headed back out into the warm sunshine and the end of the queue for Datemaki, which is my favorite Death Note doujinshi circle. They write incredibly spare, nuanced books. After about half an hour and 1.5 litres of sports drink, I managed to read half of the Idea fanfic before making it to the front, where I bought this:

their most recent Death Note book, and this:

their most recent D.Gray-man book, and this:

which is a Howl's Moving Castle book, and this too:

which is a compilation of their lovely Bleach doujinshi, before heading to the front of the hall for Flow Snow's table. Flow Snow is my favorite producer of Saiyuki doujinshi. Sadly, she seems to have moved away from that fandom now (although I can't be certain because Saiyuki was on Friday and she doesn't have a website).

Anyway, I love Flow Snow so much that where she goes, I follow like the obedient fandom duckling I am. Thus, I bought these two books:

which are apparently for a series called Gintama (Silver Soul), which I will most likely be investigating because I love Flow Snow that much. Then I canvassed the nearby tables for Death Note doujinshi. I first picked up this:

which is an absolutely hilarious send-up of the first four tankoubon, providing one can read Japanese. Stumbling along, I encountered this very much out of place doujinshi:

which I snapped up for its excellent artwork and storyline so obviously cribbed from KGM as to not be funny.

I next picked up these two books by Ma Yone:

who does lovely orphanage-era LMN stuff. Then I bought these three books:

by Moon Stone, a circle whose illustrations are so on it's unbelievable. After that I surfed over to the Bleach and D.Gray-man areas, which were nearly impossible to navigate thanks to all the people choking the aisles.

My first stop was for this:

whose opening panel is breath-robbing, knock-you-on-the-floor gorgeous. Erotic is another word that springs to mind, and this coming from someone who doesn't even like Byakuya/Renji. Then I picked up these three books by Zanzibar:

which also feature B/R and Renji/Ichigo, another pairing I don't give much of a hoot about. However. Their illustrations are so textured and dynamic that I'd happily buy a Renji/Ichigo's mama doujin, provided Zanzibar's writing it.

Then I moved on to D.Gray-man, where the crowds were starting to thin down to managable levels as the better books sold out. This is another series where my favorite characters do not seem to be fan favorites, so I did more looking than buying. I did, however, walk away with these three books by Passing Fancy:

The cover illustrations are gorgeous, as you can see. (I love Mucha; that probably had something to do with my desire to purchase as well.) The books are half-manga, half-novel, and pretty good although I'm not a fan of Alan/Kanda, because I see no justification for it in canon. Regardless, I still walked away with this novel:

which at 600 yen was entirely overpriced, but I have a weakness for cute, compact books with good cover art. I also bought this book:

thanks to its surprisingly good internal art (ignore the cringe-worthy title), and this book:

because the cover resembles Houseki-Hime's art. It's got a couple of gorgeous color plates inside, and the rest is a novel, which I haven't checked out yet. My final DGM purchase was this book:

which is short, but has nice charcoal illustrations inside. Then I headed over to Harry Potter. I mostly just browse this section, because I dislike manga-ish renderings of Western fandoms. And the incredible happened. Drawn by the very un-mangaish art, I stopped by this circle's table:

to discover that their books were bilingual, and that their author lived forty minutes away from me in the Big Big City. How cool is that?

My final two purchases of the day were from Woodbell, who I discovered at last year's Comiket, and who draw the sweetest, most adorable Legolas/Gimli in the world:

They were also the first circle in Japan to do so, and have done a lot to popularise the pairing here, although as they themselves say, you really need to read the books to get it.

And you do, or you'll miss half of the jokes.

And that wrapped it up. I'm actually rather pleased at my self-restraint. There was a lot more I considered buying, but did not. Of course, this may also have something to do with the fact that Fullmetal Alchemist and Saiyuki were held on Friday this year, thus neatly removing the possibility of buying djs from my two biggest fandoms, but still. Admirable restraint was exercised. Quite proud of myself, really.

Of course, I did buy a whole lot more on Sunday, but we'll discuss that tomorrow.

Much prettiness! I don't even follow most of these fandoms, so I can admire the pretty artwork envy-free. ^_^ Glad you scored well! Thanks for sharing pics.

If I had access to djs, I think I would end up broke so damn fast, especially if the pricing was similar to what I pay for manga.

Yup:) She's from Canada, I believe.

Comiket is great fun, and you will spend too much the first time you go, but if I'm any indication, not so much the second.

Well, price depends on how popular the circle/fandom is, and whether you're buying new or used. But yeah, I spend an inordinate amount of money traveling to Osaka and Tokyo to buy the things.

Not at all. Now we just need to work on getting you into the fandoms...share the love with us, share the love...
