I was good, and held off when I was in Shibuya. But every time I go to Tokyo I seem to enter this fugue state. I might set out with the intention of buying Engrish shirts in Harajuku, but when I come to, I'm in Ikebukuro. It's silly really; I'm going to be buying doujinshi in two weeks at Comiket, but such is addiction. So anyway, just what did I buy today?
I was mainly after FMA and Death Note. Sadly, both of these fandoms have dwindled down to almost nothing. I did manage to get a bunch of extra copies of Houseki-hime/Idea's FMA doujinshi; next to KGM they are my favorite circle in that fandom. Their stuff is just excellent: complex, psychological, believable, and hot. Unfortunately, kgm's doujinshi were nowhere to be seen. This is a crying shame because that woman produces, hands down, the best FMA doujinshi on the planet (I believe
luxetumbra can testify to this;) ) It's the oddest thing; she's published at least four or five books since last year's comiket, but I can neither find them on consignment nor in second hand shops. Woe.
I did manage to get the fifth DN book by Tatemaki, who produce complex, psychological, believable and hot DN doujinshi. This feat is more impressive than it sounds; they don't include their circle name anywhere in or on their books, and it wasn't until this May that hours of dedicated trawling through the DN sections finally resulted in a name for them. Unfortunately, they seem to have moved on to D Gray-man, which is the big up-and-comer. It's an entertaining series, but it just hasn't grabbed me like FMA or DN (sorry
amasugiru).
And then the pro-doujinshi. I actually found a Sugiura Shiho doujinshi, fairly crudely illustrated and for a fandom(?) I'd never heard of. Unfortunately the $27 price tag scared me away (weeping as I went), but I'll be back in Tokyo in a few weeks, so this may just be a case of delayed gratification. Or I can just wait until the happy day of our marriage, when she will doubtlessly give me a copy for free.
I was generally very disciplined, and didn't touch the Sakurai Shu3 or Higuri You books. I dropped a wad of cash on Naono Bohra's stuff, and still only bought 1/20 of what they had available. (Adding it up, it would have cost close to $300 to buy out their stock of her work. I'm focused but not that focused.) Luckily, she djs in some pretty inexplicable fandoms like Naruto, which also kept the temptation down.
Instead of her Naruto books I grabbed a bunch of Okane ga Nai djs, which it will kill me not to read until I'm safely at home tomorrow.
I also spent a good deal of time talking fandom with the lovely
leviosa8, who is an angel for even speaking to me after I popped out at her yesterday like a demented fennish bozo the clown. Good grief. Of course, the big point of discussion was HBP, which seems to be the favorite of everyone attending the seminars currently. Even my roommates are reading HP books. Interestingly, >everyone I talk to, including the non-fandom types, are deeply concerned for Snape's welfare. The last time I talked in person with a bunch of non-fandom fans of the books (after PoA was released), people couldn't stand him. Now he seems to be a popular favorite. It's kinda cool, really.
