As evidenced by two gigantic wanks in as many days. One of them was even deemed Fandom Wank-worthy.

I'm more of an idle wank watcher than anything else, but this time I couldn't resist:

Hmmmm...another tempest in a teacup. I couldn't even generate enough interest to read more than a few posts on Fandom Wank. And I might point out that there's a LOT MORE men who "read" comics just for the SEXAY HOT GIRLS dressed in spandex (Lara Croft, Danger Girl, Vampirella, Elektra, etc. etc.). The entire American comic book business caters to adolescent male fantasies, so it's a bit hypocritical to criticize some teenage girls for liking an obscure manga series that features [what they perceive as] SEXAY HOT GUYS. Whoopdedoo, I say.

But thanks for pointing out this series. I'm rather out-of-the-loop these days when it comes to new manga and "Death Note" actually looked interesting. I did some poking around and found a site where I could d/l a couple dozen chapters of the manga. The artwork reminded me a lot of the type of art used for American adventure comic strips in the 1950s and 1960s -- the artwork had a clean, uncluttered look to it and had a few similarities to the work of comic book artists like Alex Toth and Al Williamson.

I was so tempted to reply to the original thread with "I only read Death Note for the articles" but I thought that might go over the OP's head. Agreed on the men and comics count, however. Though I do wonder what's wrong with liking a series for both content and sexiness. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

And do, do read DN. It really is unlike any other series out there. I've yet to meet anyone who hasn't been totally taken with it. The art actually reminded me of Skinwalkers at first, so it's interesting that you make the comparison to western comics. I'm also pretty sure it's a reference the artist was trying for, as well.

And now I have an icon for it. You'd think I didn't have anything better to do with my time.

Oddly, I can't get into dj for HP (or any any western fandom) because the Japanese dialogue just sounds so off to me.

Skinwalkers is a four-part graphic novel by Nunzio DeFilipis and Christina Weir and published by Oni press (not 100% sure on my spelling of the names), which is very XFish, dark, and fun. It came out in a limited run about 3 years ago, but has since been reprinted in a TPB. I do recommend it.

As far as manga goes, if you're just in it for the art, I suggest Saiyuki by Minekura Kazuya (her male bodies are the HAWT). I also love Fullmetal Alchemist, DNAngel, Silver Diamond and Koori no Mamono no Monogatari, and anything drawn by Iida Haruko. This is just what I can think of off of the top of my head; I like a lot of shounen stuff as well, but more for the storylines than the artwork.

I've also got a bunch of recs for western graphic novels and yaoi mangaka, if you'd like those as well;)

Well, with doujinshi, I just look at the images and page layouts. I can't read Japanese but I've collected manga for years and the plots are usually fairly obvious. I'm amazed at the quality of the HP doujinshi artwork but also at how the Japanese fan artists are generally ignored by the Western fans.

Western graphic novels and yaoi mangaka? Sure! What is "mangaka" exactly?

I found a nice online archive of scanlations of FM Alchemist -- lovely, crisp artwork. Cartoon Network started running the English-dubbed anime series here last fall and it's quite good. :)

HahaHAW! "I only read Death Note for the articles!" :DD I will "read" comics simply because I like the artwork of the artist who draws them. I'm sooooo shallow. :)

Hmmmm....I hope that Fandom Wank never finds out about my collection of James/Snape doujinshi. ;)

Who created Skinwalkers? Got any other manga series you'd suggest? I recently got into "Monster" (due to the artwork) and I'm always up for suggestions. I'm really out of the loop on manga these days.

Hee hee!

The whole thing made me want to shut my head in ther fridge door repeatedly. That person backtracked like a master, yet still maintained they were right.

And the amazing thing is, I think he was being genuine, and genuinely offended by the comm's response. I certainly detected no irony or obvious trolling in his comments.

Re: DN 58

Do you SEE WHY I WAS BITCHING AT EVERYONE FOR TAKING SO LONG TO READ THIS CHAPTER???'

THERE WAS NO ONE TO SHARE MY PAIN WITH!

From: [identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com

I'm all, 'shit, I haven't even started reading fanfiction yet!'

Your icon cracks me up though. XD

From: [identity profile] lebateleur.livejournal.com

The fanfic is some of the best stuff. Need any recs?

And thanks. That line was just begging for it, though.

From: [identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com

I have some recs already but I'd love to see yours too!

And yes, yes, it was.

From: [identity profile] lebateleur.livejournal.com

Okay, without knowing what any of your recs are, here's my top five:

We Fat Ourselves for Maggots (http://www.livejournal.com/users/visszater/699.html), by Visszater. Hands down THE BEST DN fanfic there is. I am in sickening awe of this fic. It's perfect. I wish I'd written it. It reduces me to squishy incomprehensibility. It's a crying shame the author doesn't seem to be active anymore.

Amnesia (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=5976), by sub divided
If it weren't for the fic above, this would be my favorite DN fic because it's so amazingly good. The brilliance this time lies in the way sub divided's done such a stunning job of building on and clarifying canon. Also in awe.

Watching Raito (http://www.livejournal.com/users/keraha/18717.html), by kerala. This story is very similar to visszater's above, or rather it should be but isn't. What I love about this fic is the amazingly sharp imagery, and the clarity of Ryuk's observations of Light.

Phobias (http://www.livejournal.com/community/loadingdock/5960.html), also by sub divided. What I love about this fic is the inventive L backstory, and especially the descriptions of his schooling experience, which is very similar to my own and thus rings incredibly true to me.

Homicide (http://veradicere.blogspot.com/2005/01/two-death-note.html), by vera. It's the first ficlet on the page. The concept is very obvious, but it's handled excellently here. I wish I could talk about it at greater length, but I won't, because I don't want to spoil you.

So what are your recs, btw?

Here, where you are recced. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mistressrenet/90436.html?thread=1455172#t1455172) I love this fandom already!

ARG, that rant ate my Sunday evening. Guy prejudges the majority of a community and is surprised by the mostly civil response.

The only thing that cracked me up was the repeated insistence that only smart people could possibly like Death Note. Dude, it's not true! Look at the OP!

From: [identity profile] lebateleur.livejournal.com

Perfect summary above. I'm not quite sure what response the OP anticipated; did he actually believe that memembers of the mostly female comm would say, "Leik OMG yeah! UR so rite I <33 L/Raato coz their so hawt adn im so dum LOLZ!"

The only thing that cracked me up was the repeated insistence that only smart people could possibly like Death Note. Dude, it's not true! Look at the OP!

What did I miss? The link no longer works, and now I feel all put out :( Seems to be the week for fandom hissyfits and sockpuppeting.

From: [identity profile] lebateleur.livejournal.com

I've fixed the FW link, but it looks like the original thread is suffering from a bad case of BAHLEETION oh noes! Basically, the OP made a post to this effect:

Hi ever notice how alot of girls only ever read Deathnote for the sexy boys? isnt that sad b/c the characters are so deep and why cant girls see beyond that to the real value of the story? what do u all think? lol

To which over 300 members of the comm stated: Uh, we read it for the articles, dipshit.

And the OP refused to rephrase his post, admit that perhaps it just might have been badly phrased, or otherwise budge from his original postion, at one point uttering the famous phrase: When i said alot of girls, i didn't mean all girls. alot can mean a few.
