What I Just Finished Reading

Ka – John Crowley
Ka is right up there with George Saunders’ Lincoln In The Bardo when it comes to books about death. On its surface, it's the story of a crow, Dar Oakley, and the humans he guides through death in pre-Roman and early Christian Britain, and pre-colonial, post-Civil War, and post-apocalyptic America. It’s also a story about the stories humans tell themselves about death and how they’ve evolved: how and why death exists, what happens to someone after they die, whether any reckoning for lifetime misdeeds or compensation for injustices endured awaits, and more. Although the story is slow to take off and Crowley fumbles a bit at the end, there are passages that will move you to tears, and the book is well, well worth the read.

What I Am Currently Reading

The End of Karma – Somini Sengupta
Published in 2016, this volume is already somewhat dated, but it’s still a fascinating snapshot of the recent political, economic, and social developments that have brought India to where it stands today.

A Liberated Mind – Steven C. Hayes
The most interesting thing about this book is the way it reinvents Buddhism without Buddhism's cultural trappings.

The Starless Sea – Erin Morgenstern
A chapter or two right before bed may be the right way to read this book.

Interior Chinatown – Charles Yu
Forty-odd pages in, this is shaping up to be an evisceration of both pop culture Asian stereotypes and Asian cultural expectations of familial roles.

おまけのこ – 畠中 恵 (Omake no Ko – Hatakenaka Megumi)
Ichitaro has encountered a youkai with the delightful name Kowai who claims to possess a single dose of a medicine that will make whoever imbibes it a master of their trade. Competition and jealousy predictably ensue among the various humans vying for access to this medicine in a very O’Henry-esque fashion.

What I'm Reading Next
This week I acquired Interior Chinatown, Jo Graham’s The Emperor’s Agent, and Robert Jackson Bennett’s Foundryside. And Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back, because.
